#389019 Halo Lorecast Episode 1!

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 19 March 2017 - 05:33 PM

Hello everyone. A couple of weeks ago, some great minds (not the greatest) in the Halo Community that are well versed in the extended universe came together to talk about said universe in general and sort of provide a podcast for listeners to catch up on the current timeline of the Halo franchise.

In attendance were myself on behalf of our lovely site 343iCF, VinWarrior of Halo Team Assemble, Adv Jones with the Halo Archive, HaruspexOfHell from Progressive Halo, and Toa_Freak AKA Halo Canon. We talk about the current extended universe entries along with the games' main story lines and bring anyone who hasn't read or played up to speed.

There is a link dump in the description but I'll throw one here because our site uses an embedded player.

We start with the latest anthology of short stories, Fractures, at 1:48.

Talk about the graphic novel Tales From Slipspace at 9:15.

Discuss Cortana at 18:00.

Review some great pieces of art from the masterpiece Halo: Mythos at 38:40.

Answer the questions we received on Twitter at 43:30.

Spoil Halo Wars 2 for people who haven't and aren't going to play it at 56:50.

And conclude with the current state of the Haloverse at 1:11:40.

Hope you enjoy!

#389005 The Weekly Site Poll 55 - Future Halo Stories

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 17 March 2017 - 06:42 AM

So I'm just gonna say it, I think the ideas behind Halo 5 aren't inherently bad. Were it executed in the most insipid, moronic, incompetent way possible? Well, yes, obviously. But that's not to say that I don't think they couldn't have worked with a decent writer.

That said: I just honestly don't see how the story can go on to improve from here. Halo 5 has dug a hole so damn deep with its characters and plot that anything that comes after is going to suffer simply because it's going to have acknowledge not just what happened, but the way that it happened. We can't just pretend the Chief had a big emotional reaction and had his loyalties and identity tested to the limit, because he didn't. We can't pretend that Blue Team were really there for him to help him work through losing Cortana and he eventually chose them over her, because they didn't, and it's not clear that he actually did. We can't pretend that it's even a case of murky perspective in which the 'truth' of what happened depends on whose side a given character was on, because it was a pathetic 'oh it was just a misunderstanding' chick flick level of cop-out that drove the animosity between the teams rather than any actual difference in perspective.

Now, if those thing had been done properly - if Chief's loyalty really had been tested, as he was specifically forced to pick between loyalty to the people who abducted him as a child and now see him as a wholly replaceable, obsolete weapon rather than a human being, and the woman who really was the only one there for him through the worst few months of his life and is offering him a chance at happiness and purpose that he damn well knows he's not going to get from the UNSC, that would have been heart-wrenching and been a wonderful fountain of inspiration for what to do with him in Halo 6. Same thing if he and Locke had genuinely been ideologically opposed - Locke very much the UNSC loyalist who thinks the S-IIs are too dangerous to be kept alive and need to be dealt with, Chief who's just starting to feel old and tired and wanting to actually be treated like something more than a machine - then you'd get the same result. If Chief had gone over to Cortana's side, you'd have a wonderful setup for a mature and adversarial campaign in which both sides could be portrayed in shades of grey, and with great potential for boss fights or character deaths to create drama. If he's made the same decision - you'd have two protagonists who're forced to work together, each knowing full well that the moment their common enemy is defeated they're going to wind up drawing guns on one another, which again could make for some good drama.

But they weren't and here we are. I always feel weird about the idea of retcons, but honestly, in this case the whole of Halo 5 was just so poorly executed that I can't see any other alternative if the story is going to be anything other than a joke in the future.

this is some brilliant writing especially because you don't necessarily have to kill off a character and everyone could be happy. You just didn't respond to the poll :(

I want Halo 1-4 to be retcon. And Halo 5 being where the story starts

wth Fish lol

I'd love to see a story following Romeo after New Blood. We know he's a Spartan IV now on top secret missions donning Deadeye Mjolnir so I'd like that explored more.

#388977 CvC Community Event Results!

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 12 March 2017 - 08:07 PM

Thank you to everyone who joined. We had our best-of-five series matches with HaloCustoms last weekend and here are the results:

On Friday we swept our friends on the virtual battlefield 3-0 winning Slayer on Perseus (a much better version of Pegasus made by no god anywhere), Slayer on Contract (remake of Construct from Halo 3), and Battle Golf on Gingerbread Falls. It was also a 3v4 with the team consisting of only @Kakashi_Hatake , @GermanShepherdD , and @Twam

Our staff and members played valiantly against our frenemies and came out with a win on the first day of the event. Find the full recap with great screenshots on HaloCustoms in their full Friday recap.

Then on Saturday, the corrupt but handsome @Psychoduck recruited a special guest to kick our butts all the way to the Ark (outside of the known galaxy). Duck got famous streamer and former competitive Halo player Vetoed to play for his team along with BTBnet admin Matclan. This was a much closer series where we were taken to a game 4. Needless to say Vetoed absolutely REQ'd us but I had a trick up my sleeve as well and called in another streamer, SMELI5A. She may not be as skilled as Vetoed but she definitely increased our chances. Results:

Get the full recap from Saturday with player stats from HaloCustoms in their Saturday recap.

And on Sunday we ended up winning as well giving us three straight wins in our friendly competition with HaloCustoms. I don't have a recap from that day but we won. GG.

Be sure to visit Halocustoms.com to meet some cool people and have fun with their innovative lobby system if you're looking for games. That's also where I watch almost all of my streams.

#388955 The Best & WORST 4 - Weapons of Halo

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 09 March 2017 - 06:54 AM

Highly subjective but I want to say the best weapon in the game is the very versatile and rugged Battle Rifle.

-Detachable scope that can be adjusted and changed.

-Effective at mid and long range. Even close range depending on the skill of its user.

-Controlled 3 shot burst for accuracy and power.

The worst weapon for me is the Focus Rifle. Like what is that thing?

-Streams plasma on a target instead one shot giving away position.

-Not nearly an effective weapon even at its intended range.

-Should really just become a Beam Rifle.

@Bill1138 your knowledge of the Haloverse is impeccable! Good to see another Halo lore buff here!

#388948 The Prophets

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 08 March 2017 - 12:14 AM

As I understand it:

For the Forerunners, the "Great Journey" was death (similar to Peter Pan saying that "to die would be a great adventure").

The Prophets' translations were extremely sub-par (as evident in them translating "Reclaimer" as "Reclemation").

Not necessarily to die, but to exile themselves from the known parts of the universe in order to atone for their sins. Dying was inclusive for some though.

#388939 Future Halo Game Ideas

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 06 March 2017 - 07:52 PM

I can't knock all these ideas. Some of these seem really fun and interesting especially Halo: Reach Reestablished. It could probably have a better title but I like the idea of there being an old Covenant enemy.

#388923 The Prophets

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 05 March 2017 - 05:24 PM

The Prophets found Forerunner artifacts and were able to interpret Forerunner scripture at an early point in history. The Forerunners have their own version of the Great Journey that they wrote about taking place after the activation of the rings. The Prophets thought that activating the Array would send them on the Great Journey not knowing what the Forerunners' Great Journey was.

#388904 CvC Community Event with HaloCustoms

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 28 February 2017 - 11:17 PM

Hello everyone, we're going to be hitting you guys with a Community Event this weekend that we'll be hosting in conjunction with our friends at HaloCustoms! The Community vs. Community, or CvC, special event will be a 3-day friendly competition consisting of a best-of-five series between two teams of four. It's first come, first serve and I'll be trying to rotate the players over the three series for anyone who hasn't played. If this goes well then we could possibly be opening this up to other communities as well!

To add to this, you guys in the community will get to choose maps and gametypes we play in our series! The members of our site will be choosing two maps and two gametypes for each series and one of the tie breakers

To sign up, message "LL Kool D" around the start of the event.

WHERE: Xbox Live

WHEN: Friday 4PM EST, Saturday 9PM EST, Sunday 5PM EST.

#388895 The Flood/ Halo Rings

Posted by Drizzy_Dan on 26 February 2017 - 09:58 AM

One Halo ring has a 3D radius of 25,000 light-years so the whole array has to be used in unison in order to wipe all sentient life from the universe.

Fishy summed up the answer to the second question pretty well. You also helped answer by asking your third question. It's because Forerunner tech was so advanced that they could construct the Array fairly quickly along with the original Array being constructed secretly against the Didact's wishes.

Lastly, because the Flood is a highly intelligent parasite remotely controlled by a hivemind being, it is near impossible to destroy physically. The Gravemind is arguably more intelligent than all of the Forerunners due to the countless minds its incorporated into its own and also because of the Primordial leaving its imprint on it making it all the more knowledgeable.

There supposedly is a way to defeat the Flood without using the Halos by using the portal at Voi according to Cortana but that was never expanded upon since it was stated as far as I know.
