highplainsdrifter
Incoming wall o' text transmission There are a few serious topics going on in this forum as of late (nothing wrong with that of course) but I thought I would change the mood and dim the lighting a bit. After all there is supposedly a release coming out on the 29th and I wanted to inspire a little extra Halo love to float through the ether. I was thinking about assassinations the other day because I realized again that energy sword wielding players forgo knife assassinations and a entirely different set of animations is substituted. After playing too much grifball and searching the web for people's opinions I wanted to make a poll for your opinions of whether or not Halo 4 should include this idea of substitution for every weapon's assassination animation. Some people believe that assassinations are simply not a good thing to include at all because MC has never had a knife ingame before, I think that this could solve that problem. We can all agree that maybe players should be able to switch assassinations on and off, and the duration for holding down the melee button could be longer. The question is should weapons have different animations for assassinations? Should these animations show ammo being used (and use it, or not use it) or not? Should this not even be an issue and assassinations should be done with the hands, knife, or both? And finally should Master Chief throw in some more technical martial arts moves; kicks, Steven Segal inspired necksnaps, jujitsu, etc.? A couple ideas from me for this are: Gravity Hammer: smack to the head jab to the spine with spiked end choke hold and neckbreak with shaft Needler: normal whack but some of the needles get stuck, break off, and explode (non damaging) Magnum: spins enemy around and pistol whips in the opposite direction, breaking the neck
The Director
For the most part they should be done with a knife (imo) because it will keep the times even. However, I would like to see an animation for the flag, gravhammer, and the oddball/bomb as well because they are also melee weapons. Just as long as all the times are the same, I see no problem with it. It shouldn't include projectile weapons unless it's melee only though.
RedStarRocket91
If you're proposing something like the Gears of War 3 system, then I'm kind of half in agreement. I think designated power weapons such as the Gravity Hammer, Shotgun and Sniper Rifle should have their own unique assassinations, but other weapons should probably just stick to a standard set. Knives not being included isn't a problem. There are already non-knife assassination moves in Reach, and these could easily be expanded on. Chief grabs the enemy and breaks their neck, pulls them backwards and punches them in the head to the floor, knocks them to the ground and jumps on their head, or just spins them around and jabs them in the face or neck. If armour decals are being used, it could even show a cracked faceplate or whatever. I also actually wouldn't mind projectile weapons actually firing during assassinations, as long as it didn't actually use ammunition. Knocking an enemy to the ground, jamming the Sniper Rifle to their face and firing, jamming the Shotgun in the ribs and firing, or bringing a Rocket Launcher or Spartan Laser down on their head. I'd also like grenade assassinations, used by pressing the grenade button during the animation. The body could then become a proximity mine or be thrown in whichever direction the player desired, or whatever. Regardless, it'd be another fun non-knife assassination. There should also be some sort of assassination cancelling system, for example if you press to melee again after the assassination has started then the victim instantly drops dead but the attacker only gets a beatdown medal regardless of how long they were performing the animation for.

I don't really agree with this only because if rotation snapping is still included players will just initiate an assassination in order to exit snap. I'm still debating myself whether using ammo or not would be a turnoff for me. I like your hand-to-hand ideas (throat jab? :sorcerer: ) and your grenade idea but i think that unless it dealt zero damage one grenade would have to be taken from your count. Darn, I forgot about rotation snap when I thought of that - oh well, never mind. As long as it's an assassination, even though the animation would show shooting someone it shouldn't actually cost ammunition, as that would be unfair. I agree using a grenade to create a bomb or a trap definitely should, though.

Fang
They just slow down gameplay. No room for showboating anymore.
Timbit
it wouldd be more realistic and seems easy for 343 to do
Fang
it wouldd be more realistic and seems easy for 343 to do I hardly think halo should be going for "realism". The Director
I hardly think halo should be going for "realism". Playing video games for realism seems a little weird, especially in a sci-fi FPS You obviously don't know what sci-fi means bro. Sci-fi is by very definition supposed to be realistic. It's supposed to be a fictional story based off of actual fact. I think the genre YOU are thinking of is "Fantasy" which has all sorts of nice and magical non-realistic things for you like unicorns, fairies, and talking rabbits. Sci-fi, on the other hand, is supposed to by a genre based on science and fact, which Halo has actually been pretty decent at so far. Everything that is in Halo (except Easter Eggs) is explainable, if you know most of the story line. If you don't want realism, don't play sci-fi.
Fang
In its own universe its "realistic" the term is subjective when used in this context. I still dont believe we should be pushing all this "realism". Especially in the manner that this poster was using it. You are trying to argue whether or not halo is logical by its laws of physics not whether its realistic. We judge realism by our own perspective. Also dont call me "bro" unless you prefer coming off as condescending.
highplainsdrifter
I'm pretty sure using the weapon you're holding would be more realistic than your gun suddenly disappearing and being replaced with a knife. It's just a little thing that would make Halo move smoother and not get as old as fast. The current assassinations don't 'get old fast' for me but i think this would add a lot more beauty to the campaign, multiplayer, customs, and firefight without sacrificing anything really. As for showboating, I can understand that, they aren't necessary but they show skill/rashness and are fun. And fun is what Halo is about. We can all agree that maybe players should be able to switch assassinations on and off, and the duration for holding down the melee button could be longer. Keep it clean frands

I think it just takes away from the game but a fair compromise would be the option to turn it on/off

Twisty 360
U should b able 2 jump on hunter's back and shove a grenade in it. There should deffinately b a hammer assassination. Hand-2-hand would be good as well. I dont think 'nades and shooting should be involved on regular enemies because assassination r supposed 2 be quiet and stealthy. May b assassinations could depend on ur surroundings like u bash sum1s head against a wall repeatedley. Mayb there could b double assassinations like u smash 2 dudes heads 2 gether a couple of times.
