    • Nintendo is rolling out a new patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate very soon. The game's 9.0.1 update is scheduled to go live today, October 21, and it appears it'll include more character tweaks. Nintendo has not shared patch notes for the new update yet, so it's not exactly clear what changes are being made to the game. The company only notes that the 9.0.1 update will include "fighter adjustments." This also means you'll need to convert any replay data you've saved before it's rendered incompatible with the new version of the game. Smash Bros. Ultimate's 9.0 update arrived last week. Along with various balance adjustments, that update introduced the game's latest DLC character, Steve (and Alex) from Minecraft. The blocky fighter arrived alongside a brand-new stage, as well as a selection of Minecraft Spirits to unlock. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
    • Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are scheduled to release soon, and a big part of deciding whether to go with Sony or Microsoft (or both) in the next console generation is dependent on the games that you'll be able to play. To that end, we've compiled a list of all of the projects being worked on by both the Xbox Game Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios so you know what's in store for both their platforms. To clarify, this list does not include all of the console exclusives coming to Xbox Series X/S and PS5. For example, we don't talk about Bloober Team's The Medium and Ebb Software's Scorn for Xbox Series X/S, nor do we touch on Housemarque's Returnal and Counterplay Games' Godfall for PS5 because Microsoft and Sony do not own those developers. Though given the two's commitment to expanding their studio lineups--most recently, Sony with Insomniac Games and Microsoft with ZeniMax Media (Bethesda Softworks' parent company)--who knows if that will hold true by the time this next console generation is done. If you want to know what you'll be able to play day one, we've compiled lists of every launch game for Xbox Series X/S as well as every launch game for PS5. And be sure to stay glued to our Generation Next hub for all the news, hands-on impressions, and spec breakdowns for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 and their corresponding accessories. We have guides for preordering Xbox Series X/S and preordering PlayStation 5 as well. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
    • Ebb Software's Scorn, a dark and grotesque horror-adventure game set within a bio-mechanical labyrinth, has been many years in the making. First revealed in 2016, Scorn is a narrative-driven FPS that blends Bioshock's grotesque body-horror and action gameplay with the bizarre and nightmarish imagery from H.R. Giger's work on the Alien franchise. Scorn will be making its debut on PC and for the Xbox Series X|S as a next-gen console exclusive, with a planned release set for sometime in 2021. Ebb Software has now revealed more of what's to come with the game, showcasing a near-final look at the horror game. Ahead of the Xbox Series X|S's debut on November 10, GameSpot has exclusive gameplay showing off nearly 14 minutes of the game's grotesque environments that players will be able to explore, along with the many organic weapons that can be found within. This gameplay, running on the Xbox Series X, shows a lot of the game's mood and dark horrors that await. In a similar vein to Bioshock, Scorn drops players into a strange environment filled with hostile enemies and a peculiar atmosphere that hints that something has gone wrong. Scorn takes this approach a bit further by focusing on a setting that feels totally alien and unnatural, which gives it something of an alluring, yet still unsettling vibe. To survive, you'll have to embrace some of the more grotesque and bizarre elements found within the bio-mechanical hellscape. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
    • Puyo Puyo Tetris was an unlikely but thoroughly addictive puzzle game when it arrived in 2014 and was eventually ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2017, and now its sequel is aiming to improve on its formula by adding RPG mechanics to its Skill Battle modes. Players can create a team of three characters in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2's new mode, with each member having their own specialty skill that can reverse the tide of battle. These skills include the ability to recover HP, change the color of Puyos and even erase lines of Tetrominos. As you battle through the dual-puzzle mode, you'll be able to earn experience points and increase the power of your team. You can level up a character's health points, mana points, attack, defense, and recovery by playing through the game's Adventure mode, and Item Cards can be used to improve character stats. • Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch hasn't yet announced what it is working on next, but a new job listing suggests that the studio might stick with its new IP for the foreseeable future. The job listing for a narrative writer makes two mentions of Feudal Japan, requesting that applicants have an interest in the history of the era and have a desire to write stories for it. This suggests that Sucker Punch is either working on additional content for its PlayStation exclusive, or are preparing to start work on a sequel. A sequel to Ghost of Tsushima would hardly be surprising, especially given the track record of recent Sony exclusives. Sony Santa Monica has already revealed a sequel to 2018's God of War, while Insomniac is launching Spider-Man: Miles Morales with the PlayStation 5, continuing the story of the first title. • Fortnite's latest patch has gone live, and in addition to substantially shrinking the size of the game, it also kicks off a new version of its annual Halloween event. Fortnitemares 2020: Midas' Revenge dresses up the battle royale for the spooky season and allows for players who have been defeated in Solo, Duos, or Squads mode to be resurrected as a deadly Shadow. As one of these beings, players are enhanced with supernatural abilities and can even possess vehicles as they hunt down the remaining competitors who still have a pulse. Players can fight back with new items like the Pumpkin Rocket Launcher, Fiend Hunter Crossbow, and Witch Brooms. Fortnitemares 2020 will run from October 21 to November 3, and there'll be plenty of rewards to collect and challenges to complete. Some of the special rewards include Midas' Shadow Wrap, the Smash O'Lantern Pickaxe, Bobo Back Bling, and more. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
    • First-party Nintendo Switch controllers are typically quite pricey, with an extra pair of Joy-Con selling for $80 and the more conventional Pro Controller listed at $70. While we didn't see any discounts on first-party controllers during Prime Day, Walmart and Amazon are both selling Joy-Con and Pro Controllers for $11 off. Both gamepads are featured in our best Nintendo Switch controllers roundup and Nintendo Switch gift guide. Best of all? There are multiple Joy-Con color variations available at the discounted price. • A recent NBA 2K21 update added an unwanted feature to the game--unskippable ads for the Oculus Quest 2--placing them on loading screens as players waited for matches to begin. Many saw this as a greedy move on publisher 2K Games' part, but the company has offered an apology. In a post on the official NBA2K Twitter account, the company said it has put advertisements into its 2KTV segments before, but they weren't intended to be part of the pre-game introduction. That will be fixed with newer episodes and it should make them less invasive. As you can see if you check the replies from players, the apology wasn't universally accepted. • The Crown Tundra, the second DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield, comes out on October 22. The DLC adds a new area to explore as well as more story elements and a heavy focus on Legendary Pokemon. This includes Galarian forms of Kanto's Legendary birds--Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres--as well as new Regis, a deer with a massive head named Calyrex, and basically every single Legendary Pokemon in the history of the series. We recently saw half an hour of footage from The Crown Tundra, including hints about the story and a more in-depth look at the new Dynamax Adventures mode. Most of the Legendary Pokemon introduced to Sword and Shield through The Crown Tundra are found in this raid mode, while the Galarian birds and Calyrex seem to be tied to storylines instead. Here's everything we learned about the Legendaries and how you can get them. Dynamax Adventures and Legendary Pokemon As was previously revealed, the main way to catch Legendary Pokemon in The Crown Tundra is through the new Dynamax Adventures feature. During a Dynamax Adventure, you team up with up to three other players (or NPCs) to "enter" a Max Raid lair and battle a series of Pokemon before finally facing a Legendary. However, you aren't actually going into the lair the way you would a cave in previous Pokemon games; it's more of an overall map of the lair with branching pathways, and you can see what lies ahead. The strategy is in planning out which way you'll go so you can survive long enough to face the Legendary Pokemon at the end. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
    • We've heard news of games' file sizes ballooning over the last few years due to constant updates and additions, but Epic Games is taking Fortnite in the opposite direction—at least on PC. The game's latest update makes massive optimization changes to the game, resulting in a much smaller footprint. The full patch size is about 27GB on PC (ours was actually a little smaller) but despite the hefty download, it reduces the file size by about 60GB once it's fully installed. Epic Games said this will also allow for smaller download sizes on future updates and will also improve loading performance. For context, we checked our own file size, and the game took up almost 90GB on PC prior to this patch. The wizardry at play here is rather stunning, especially as so many other games are seeing such bloat. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has grown so large on PC that certain storage devices can't even hold the game when it's the only thing installed. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
