It seems that once they moved to the Falcon in Halo Reach and that wasn't as well recieved that they decided to remove it all-together. Looking back upon it they probably should have just reverted back to the Hornet. That thing could carry people, fly solo, wreck vehicles and infantry alike, and traverse the battlefield with unparalleled ease.
