If you're talking about the energy sword, you couldn't use it until Halo 2. You've also never been able to dual-wield the energy sword (or any melee weapon) in a Halo game. Maybe it was custom edition, but you can/could not in the actual game. He might have had some sort of mod or something that allowed him to do so, since it isn't a natural part of the game to be allowed to dual-wield them.
