Why the ending was Bad. (spoilers)

First off I dont personally think the ending was bad from most objective standpoints (well written, good quality, and had me emotionally invested) The problem I see with it is the fact that its not the end to a movie. What do i Mean? The problem i think most fans of halo and the story have with the ending is that cortana dies (duh) but why? (besides the fact cortana is awesome and hawt) Because there are two main objectives in the game 1. Save cortana! 2. stop the didact. And at the end you're left not even knowing if you've accomplished either of them. mostly not knowing about the didact. I know there are lots of plot points that look like they were made to bring back cortana, but no gamer (halo fan or not) likes running through a game (especially on legendary) only to get to the end and boom doesnt matter that you busted ur ass, she's dead.

Atleast for me it almost made the whole campaign seem for nothing yeah chief may have stopped the didact, but the mood is not focused on chief's victory in this but rather the loss of cortana and possibly that the didact is not even dead. Imo this will leave most players with a bad taste in their mouths. In all the halo games (dunno about odst cant remember much from the campaign.) An objective is clearly accomplished (even with the death of the main char in reach). But in halo 4 it feels like nothing was accomplished chief just woke up and couldnt do crap to help cortana. Even if stopping the didact was accomplished that almost seemed secondary to saving cortana. And again is not stressed in the ending.

In essence when I beat the game It felt as if I had lost it.

you were going to save cortana but it looks like she just forced the last bit of herself to die/something

so she could save john and have a little more time to say good bye

she will not be back in halo 5

why? cause it would be dumb

she will be back in halo 6

why? cause

i cant tell if that bad guy is really dead or not

The "objective" of Halo 4 was to show that Chief was not a machine. If you remember, Cortana said "Which one of us is the machine?". So, after the loss of Cortana, it showed that Chief is not a machine and that he truly did care for Cortana. In the end we see that Chief may have lost a close companion, but he has now shown us all that he is not just a 2-ton killing machine, but yet, he is someone who cares about all that he does, even when it may cause sadness to himself. I will leave with this quote.

"To Be A Good Leader, You Had To Love The Service. To Be A Great Commander, You Had To Be Willing To Destroy That Which You Love." - Admiral Whitcomb

I thought the ending was well executed. It was supposed to be dark, and frankly you don't always get what you were striving for. The fact that your main objective essentially failed only brings out the idea that things don't go according to plan. Halo 4 brings in a strong sense of reality that is hard to swallow for some.

They say Halo 5 will be darker, so don't expect Cortana back in the next game, if at all.

I'm thinking Cortana will be back in Halo 6. The only issue is how she could possibly come back. I see no evidence of being able to rationally restore Cortana, so 343 would need to pull some magic. But let's say there's a way to restore her. After they do it, considering AI's go rampant, they might (and this is a big might) make her human, or "give her life" in some way.

My reasoning? Why else would 343 introduce the Composer? It's an artifact that can turn life to data, and data to life.

Thoughts?

I think making her human with the Composer is exactly what they set out to do.

My guess is that we'll learn of her possible return at the end of Halo 5, maybe as a small clip in the legendary ending.

Everything isn't always happy sunshine and rainbows. Expect Halo 5 to be even darker.

The ending to reach was not happy but the objective was completed. I do not think the ending was bad from a story standpoint but rather a video game standpoint.

It's a trilogy, judging it now is practically like reading a page of a book and labeling it a bad book.

so no one should review any videogames until an entire series comes out? a trilogy is only as strong as the parts that make it up. (i think halo 4 is good lol)

343 may use this sense of failure to strengthen victories in the other games. but it does not change the fact that the ending feels disappointing. (which is probably what 343 wants)

That is 343's objective Not the players objective. When i kill covenant im not thinking "man im doing this to see how human the chief is"

All in all i do like the game and its story but i think that this is the source of some of the negative attitudes towards the ending. (atleast the ones with no evidence that seem genuine)
