Though the Xbox 360 currently has a litany of streaming options available, back in 2007 that just wasn’t the case. About the only thing you could stream on your 360 in 2007 were files from your computer, as long as it was Windows compatible. Microsoft didn’t always plan for that to be the case though, and as tech website Tom’s Guide found (and Joystiq reported), Microsoft was actually planning to allow console owners to record digital content directly to their consoles. A patent for a gaming console DVR filed in 2007 by Microsoft was just approved, and though it’s not likely to affect 360 owners that much, the prospects are intriguing for future Microsoft devices. Even though the 360 now offers a large amount of streaming options, with even more to come, a DVR function would actually be pretty handy. It would take the next Xbox one step closer to becoming a fully-fledged media center that would truly be the centerpiece of any owner’s living room. That said, pretty much every cable provider in the nation now offers a DVR set-top box with a subscription, so the value of this patent may not be what it once was in 2007. Of course, just because new technology (or old tech in new devices) has been patented, that doesn’t mean it will ever see the light of day. Microsoft could have developed this patent to make sure no other gaming console could offer the feature. The timing of the filing was right around the release of the PS3, so the possibility can’t be entirely ruled out. What do you think? Will the next Xbox come with a DVR, or is it an unnecessary feature thanks to all the streaming options available?

Square-Enix has announced that a demo of Final Fantasy XIII-2 is coming to Xbox Live on January 11. In addition, a new trailer for the game reveals the role of the venerable Moogle in FFXIII-2, as an assistant to Serah. She can use her Moogle to uncover rare treasures called “Wild Artefacts” by using his scanning magic on certain parts of a dungeon map. Her partner Noel can actually pick up and fling the Moogle for distance, making it possible for Serah to pick up treasures that the player otherwise couldn't reach. The Moogle also enables an ability called the “Mog Clock” that lets Serah and Noel begin battles with either a bonus or a penalty. It's not clear from the trailer how the Mog Clock works or what the exact penalties and bonuses are, though the Mog Clock seems to make preemptive strikes easier as a bonus. Naturally, the trailer also doesn't make it clear exactly why Serah is traveling with a Moogle or exactly what the Moogle's relationship to her is. Maybe the demo can shed a little more light on that when it drops on the 11th.

Ninja Theory co-founder and "Chief Creative Ninja" Tameem Antoniades has revealed that he received death threats over the studio's reboot of Devil May Cry, specifically the redesign of the series' main character Dante. In an interview with OXM, Antoniades said that 28 Days Later (and Enslaved) writer Alex Garland had warned him about such behaviour, but he wasn't prepared for the creative ways in which angry fans threatened his life. "Alex Garland warned me about it because he experienced a similar thing with 28 Days Later where people were upset that it didn't feature real zombies. And now with his upcoming Dredd movie," he said. "So I was half prepared for it, although I have to say that it has been pretty eye opening to see some of the creative ways in which people have chosen to vent their hatred. We didn't expect death threats in comic book form or anti-DmC death metal songs!" "It's pretty hard for me to back the decisions we made without showing actual gameplay to the public. So until that time comes, and it will come soon, I just have to put up with the rage." It's not entirely bad though. Antoniades also said that, "lots of people have come and said that they are now interested in DmC whereas they had previously lost interest in the series. We'll see how this plays out." DmC is out this year.

Despite allaying people's fears over Xbox Live apparently being hacked back in November following reports in The Sun newspaper, new reports of hacking have cropped up online this week raising concerns that the security of Microsoft's online service might have been compromised. The latest occurence comes from an Xbox Live subscriber who had her account sold through a China-based site, to a Polish Xbox Live user. Once she discovered what had happened to her account, finding that unauthorised purchases had been made through the service using PayPal, the hacked user got in touch with Microsoft's Xbox Live Customer Service, at which point she was assured that her account had been deactivated to allow for investigation. 72 hours later however, the user returned to her account only to find that it hadn't been blocked at all, and that more money had been taken from it via PayPal once again. Microsoft claimed that this was down to one of several "malicious 'phishing' scams", maintaining that "Xbox Live has not been hacked. Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service," read a statement issued in November 2011. In October, hackers had also apparently gained access to Xbox Live user profiles, which were then used to purchase Microsoft Points and to buy content for FIFA 11 and FIFA 12, and there have even been reports of Xbox Live hacking stretching all the way back to November 2010. Still, it remains unclear what exactly is going on with the security of Xbox Live and whether these reported breaches are down to phishing scams, as Microsoft claims, or a compromise of the service's security. For the time being, we'd recommend staying vigilant when signed in to Xbox Live and perhaps take VG247's advice of at least considering purchasing Microsoft Points cards from retailers, rather than directly via credit card or PayPal. If you're concerned about your Xbox Live account, you can get in touch with the Xbox Live Customer Service on www.xbox.com/security.

Both the Xbox 360 successor AND a follow up to the PS3 will be shown at E3 2012. The LA show tease will come as Wii U launch details are locked in – and should ensure no ground is lost between competing consoles. It will mark the very first time in the show’s 17-year history that three fresh, rival console formats will be so directly comparable. Microsoft has long been rumoured to detail its next-gen plans at E3 2012, and recently signalled to partners this will happen, MCV has been told. The 360 is one of the longest-serving games consoles in history. But the real surprise is an early move from Sony. Execs at the PlayStation firm have made it clear to third-parties that they will not be left behind this time. Execs aren’t expecting price or launch details for the new Xbox or PlayStation. But their unveiling could be a perfect spoiler to the pre-Christmas launch date and price that will be revealed for Wii U in June

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for...Marcus Fenix, it seems. Gears of War 3, the Xbox 360's best-selling platform exclusive for 2011, would've sold even more had it not been the most pirated Xbox 360 game of 2011, according to TorrentFreak.com. Almost one million copies of Epic Games' chainsaw-bayonetted trilogy-ender -- 890,000, to be precise -- were illicitly downloaded on Torrent sites after (and in some cases, before) its September 20 release. Also popular among ne'er-do-wells was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (830,000 Torrent downloads), Battlefield 3 (760,000), Forza Motorsport 4 (720,000), and Kinect Sports: Season Two (690,000). Remember kids, crime doesn't pay. All of these folks are subject to being banned from Xbox Live if they logon with their stolen copies.

Will Halo 3 be removed from Xbox Live once Halo 4 Launches?
Spectral Jester replied to Konshens's topic in Halo 3 + ODST
dont be surprised if they do....H3 will die when H4 comes out (thats assuming its a hit that is plus it make sense to switch off the servers for H3 when H4 comes out, they Halo community wont be fractured then over H3, Reach and H4. -
Having previously announced that Gotham City Impostors will be touching down on January 10th, Warner Bros Games has today confirmed that the XBLA multiplayer shooter that pits the ragtag Bats against the manic Jokerz, will now be launching sometime this February instead. Creating your very own Bats or Jokerz gang member from a range of customisation options, you'll be able to march to war on the streets of Gotham in GC Impostors, with an arsenal of homebrew gadgets and weaponry, such as spring boots, gliding wings and so forth. Monolith, DC Entertainment and WB Games' Gotham City Impostors will be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 Microsoft Points in February.

• Living Dead updated. Zombies need games to go along with their brains, which is why 343 updated this playlist to include the following new spooky map variants: Bedlam, Uncongealed, Pandemic, Count d’Houen, Deadwalk, Powerless, Spooky Base, and Parasitic. 343 also don’t want you to be “All Alone,” so they've turned up the weighting on Condemned. • Team Arena, Big Team Battle and Double Team updated to TU settings. TU game types are our standard Reach Matchmaking settings with the Title Update changes. Those changes are: damage bleed enabled, modified reticle bloom, sword block removed, Armor Lock modified, and Active Camo modified. • Squad DLC added. All DLC included/required. Yes, 343 read our forums. No, they don’t always respond with words, because sometimes they respond with action instead. Like this time. When Premium Battle was removed, threads about its disappearance slowly began cropping up. 343 adjusted the Matchmaking algorithm to match players who have DLC with other players who have DLC more often, but 343 noticed many players saying they still weren’t getting enough DLC to satisfy their map-related cravings. So they are bringing a premium list back in the form of 6v6 DLC Slayer. This list is being introduced on a probationary status due to the low population previously experienced in Premium Battle. 343 will be keeping a very close eye on its numbers, so if you want it to stick around, you’d best play it. Consider this your first warning. • Abridged updated to latest version. The creators, theforceswithin and schmittler 5000, made numerous changes to this map. Here are a few they deemed significant enough to mention: 1. Multi-flag has been improved. The flags now spawn in the front of the base a few feet from the GL (previous PL spawn). 2. A teleporter has been added inside the base that leads up to the two-story (Concussion) towers. This significantly improves movement. 3. The gravity lift to the Falcon has been moved into the base to stop vehicles from getting stuck in a permanent floating state. 4. Kill zones have been overhauled. It is now possible to fly underneath the bridge, and there are no HLG spots that we have found to be a problem. They also removed the shotguns. • 2v2 variants of Solitary and Battle Canyon added to Double Team. 343 adjusted the Matchmaking algorithm to match players who…. never mind. Enjoy the varied terrain. • Grifball early win behavior fixed. Goosechecka requested that all games go to 343 rounds. 343 politely declined, and instead fixed the early win behavior on previously affected game types. • Zealot, Countdown, and Penance added to Team Snipers. The long barrel was in need of some attention, so 343 diversified the Team Snipers playlist with some smaller maps. 343 recommend forgoing the scope and going straight for the wild flailing. It’s a legitimate strategy.

Having shifted 11 million units, it was inevitable that LEGO Batman would be making a comeback, but we never expected him to bring so much company with him. Warner Bros Games has just announced LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, which will see the plastic Bat and Robin returning alongside an army of fellow heroes. TT Games' sequel includes not only the dynamic duo, but also Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman, who must fight to save Gotham City from Lex Luthor and the Joker. Naturally, the same tried and tested LEGO gameplay will return, with the same brand of humour and action that the series is known for. "LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes builds upon the action and cooperative gameplay experience established in our best-selling LEGO videogame to date, LEGO Batman: The Videogame," said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games. "We're offering fans a rich and expansive Gotham City environment filled with cool characters, great customisation options and plenty of surprises that families, young gamers and DC Universe fans can enjoy together." Featuring new gadgets, outfits and new areas of Gotham to explore, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes will be swooping into stores in summer 2012.
