Dropping Full rank

To my knowledge it was you could drop tiers within a division say platinum 6 down to platinum 1 but could never drop back to gold. Well this is completely false for me or there is a bug I was onyx 1600 in team slayer went on a losing streak and now I am back in diamond 6 I thought this was not possible
