Volition, the Illinois-based game developer known best for creating the Saints Row series, has shut down. The studio marked its 30th anniversary this year.

In a post on LinkedIn, Volition said the closure was the result of parent company Embracer's previously announced restructuring program. When the restructuring was announced, Embracer said layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations were to be expected.

Volition said it is providing job assistance and other help to affected developers. "We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts," Volition said.

Volition had more than 230 employees on staff as of 2021.

Volition released a Saints Row reboot in 2022. The game underperformed commercial expectations at launch, but Embracer's CEO said he was confident the game would make money and serve as a "starting point" for the series going forward. The Saints Row reboot was the No. 2 best-selling game of its launch month in August 2022 in the US, trailing only perennial powerhouse Madden NFL 23.

The Saints Row reboot is one of the free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers in September, and players can jump in starting on September 5.

In addition to the Saints Row series, Volition is known for the Red Faction and Descent franchises, as well as Agents of Mayhem.
