EA Sports has revealed NHL 24's cover star, and it's none other than Colorado Avalanche phenom Cale Makar. The 24-year-old who also plays for Team Canada is one of the NHL's brightest stars and most electric players, and he's also known for that time he ate a cookie on the bench.

Makar won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022, also taking home the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff MVP. Makar also won the Norris trophy in 2022 for being the league's best defenseman.

Posting on Twitter, Makar said he "couldn't be more excited" to be this year's cover star. "Honored to have this opportunity," he added. The game's full reveal is taking place on August 16.

When Makar won the Stanley Cup in 2022, he said his life felt like a video game. "There's nothing better than this. You dream of this. It feels so surreal. It feels like a video game right now," he said.

Makar played college hockey at the University of Massachusetts where he won the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in all of college hockey in the 2018-2019 season. He entered the NHL for the 2019-2020 season and took home the Calder Trophy as the top rookie.

Makar plays defense for the Avalanche but also has serious offensive skills, as evidenced in the incredible highlight reel goal you can see below.

If history is any indication, NHL 24 should be released around October 2023. Basically nothing about the game beyond its cover star is known as of yet, but those details should come into focus on August 16 when the game is officially announced.

EA Sports recently teased a motion-capture session with a number of ice hockey influencers, including Pavel Barber, who apparently helped out to provide motion-capture for ridiculous moves like the one below.

NHL 23 had two cover stars, Trevor Zegras and Sarah Nurse. The game is currently available through EA Play and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
