For the first time, Sony has announced that it will begin publicly testing PlayStation 5 game-streaming. The company announced in a blog post that titles from the PlayStation Plus catalog and select trials, as well as some PS5 games that people already own, will be available to stream over the cloud.

This feature is coming at some point in the future for all PS Plus Premium members, but a specific date was not announced, nor did Sony announce what games will be supported.

Sony said the aim here is to make it easier for players to jump into games, as no local download is required. The company went on to say that it wants to add streaming support for "as many games as possible," but only a limited selection will be available at the start.

PS4, PS3, and classic PlayStation games are always available to stream for Premium users. "We're in the early stages right now, and we can’t wait to share more details when we're ready, including a launch time frame," Sony said.

Game streaming has been available on Xbox for some time already.

Sony's announcement follows commentary from Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, who said in May that Sony had "aggressive" plans in the works for the cloud gaming space.

The cloud gaming market has been a focal point of Microsoft's attempt to purchase Activision Blizzard. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority said Microsoft should not be allowed to buy the Call of Duty company due in part to concerns about the cloud gaming market.
