During Bethesda's extensive Starfield Direct, the developer of this next big RPG detailed how you can making your character in this massive galaxy feel distinct, and what tools you'll have at your disposal to craft the type of experience you want to play.

Bethesda role-playing games have always had some element of character creation, with Fallout 4 most recently implementing a novel mechanic that combined attributes from your created parents to ultimately render your character's look. In Starfield, Bethesda says it has made the most detailed character creator yet, with a variety of options and sliders letting you dial in the perfect look for your space-faring adventurer.

In addition to your look, the character creator will let you define a backstory that will ultimately influence character interactions throughout the world. The options on show look equally in-depth, with large paragraphs of lore filling in all the blanks and answering any questions you might want to be able to rely during your journey across space.

Defining a character is only one part of a role-playing game. More important is how you're empowered to play the way you want, and Starfield seems primed to allow for a wide range of different playstyles. Bethesda mentions paths that let you play as anything from a passive explorer to a violent bounty-hunter, a space cowboy, star-hopping trucker, or even a highly intelligent Netrunner. Bethesda says all of these styles of play are supported, and propped up by Starfield's extensive skill system.

Like other RPGs, you'll level up after acquiring enough experience and earn skill points that can then be used to unlock new abilities. These abilities can be ranked up by completing specific challenges, letting you hone in on the ones that you think define your build and afford you a way to play the game in a way you want. Skills are varied, too, with anything from the ability to mind-control alien species to a handy jetpack that makes traversal a breeze.

Starfield looks like an immense role-playing game, with Bethesda promising a world for every type of player to get lost in. It launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 6, and will be available on Game Pass at launch.
