Well, we do have to have the game fair to all levels of players. Some novice players would not be able to rank up if it was skill based, and they would not feel very strongly towards that. Maybe even lose fans. 343 is just trying to keep it fair for all audiences.

We also don't know if, besides the experience system, there is also another ranking system in place. Perhaps they've used the experience based system for basic ranking and unlocking, yet given us another system more close to Halo 2 and Halo 3's. There's no way to tell for sure, but either way I'm not too bothered by it.

I'm not keen on this idea of having to buy new loadout items with points gained from ranking up. That's going to shoehorn newer players into certain playstyles which may not suit them as well, and that really does hand an extra advantage to veteran players which just isn't necessary.

 

I can see a lot of players jumping into Spartan Ops before Matchmaking, and that's a bit of a shame. At least it means you don't have to go in Matchmaking with a huge disadvantage, though.
