xbox live splitscreen not working for halo 4

i keep trying to play split screen on halo 4 but it keeps saying i need xbox live gold when i sign into guest

What game mode are you trying to play? If it is Matchmaking then the error could be pointing out that XBL is required to play split screen matchmaking.
