Starfield is a spacefaring RPG that asks questions about the nature of the universe and humanity's place in it. As it happens, the game is launching right around the time of an awe-inspiring and real-life astrological event: the arrival of the Super Blue Moon.

The full moon in the sky tonight, August 30, is actually a Super Blue Moon--which is when the phenomenons known as the supermoon and the Blue Moon combine. A Blue Moon is the term for when two full moons happen in the same month (and nothing to do with the color), while a supermoon is when a full moon is closer to Earth than normal.

Blue Moons happened once every two or three years, while supermoons happen multiple times per year. The next Super Blue Moon won't happen until 2037 (insert joke about the release date for The Elder Scrolls 6 here).

If you want to see the Super Blue Moon, go outside after sunset tonight and hope the clouds are clear in your area. Head to Space.com to read more about the Super Blue Moon and the science behind it.

Starfield releases for everyone on September 5, but people who buy the $100 Constellation edition or the $35 upgrade can start playing on August 31. Preloading just started on Steam, and now the game is available to preload on all platforms ahead of release.

Starfield doesn't have a native Xbox One version, but the game is playable on that console via cloud gaming.

Starfield is Bethesda Game Studios' first new IP in 25 years, and its first new game since 2018's Fallout 76. Starfield will be supported with post-launch content, including the Shattered Space story expansion. After Starfield, Bethesda will develop The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5.
