First Gameplay Impressions? Absolutely terrible...

Hi I'm a long term Halo fan so obviously I've been looking forward to this game for a while. I immediately jumped right into matchmaking and discovered that (unless some kind of a patch comes out) the game is ruined.

1) What is this thrust thing that keeps happening!?

Why is it that every time I try and melee someone I get this bizarre rocket-boost bull**** where instead of hitting them I just fly past them at breakneck speed and completely lose my bearings and spatial awareness. Absolutely awful feature of the game and needs an immediate outright removal. Why make the game so complicated? The great thing about Halo 3 is that we knew what out buttons would do when we press them. Now I'm scared to melee anyone because I know I'll probably just get teleported 5 feet in front of me instead.

2) Recon controls have been totally abandoned

I've been playing since Halo 3 and if there is one thing I HATE it is having to use the bumper to melee people. I use 'B' to melee and I always have. The problem is now that the 'down the sights' thing has been introduced at left trigger, you can switch to recon without having an awful 'down the sights' thing at right thumbstick instead. I absolutely hate this and just can't get used to it at all.

3) Maps are boring and no weapons on any of them

Where are the weapons?! The first 5 games I played the only weapon I managed to pick up was a plasma pistol? What about the snipers? The energy swords? The rocket launchers? Where is everything!?

4) Playlists are awful

I despise 4v4 team slayer but I'm basically forced to play it now because there is no alternative. Where is the big team battle? I used to love that playlist because you could sample all the vehicles and weapons and just have fun. And no I'm not talking about that war zone crap where nine tenths of the enemies are 'easy' difficult AI and you can barely even find anyone on the other team.

That's my evaluation of the game so far. I hope it gets fixed and I understand it's only day one so there is no point being too negative, it's just unbelievably upsetting when a game you look forward to for so long turns out to be garbage. :(

I completely agree.  I would go so far as to say that it is even worse than Halo: Reach.  And by that, I mean that even though most of the colors present were neutral, there were at least better details.  More focus on the finer details, rather than making it all SHINE.  It looks horrible, I can't even recognize the detail in-game, which is extremely disappointing.  In addition, there are horrible hit markers, no bleed through, and the aiming just isn't natural.  Rather than going where I point the joystick, it instead feels choppy and unnatural.  I have lost faith in this game type.  I will continue to try the game for a few days, but it looks unlikely.

They did this with Halo 4.  Rather than "try" different playlists, just MAKE THEM ALL AVAILABLE.

Also, LET THE PLAYERS SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN EACH PLAYLIST.

I have this nasty feeling that if we saw how many other people were playing, most people would leave.

Disgraceful.

Good post, OP.  See you out there.. Though probably not :(

That is your Shoulder Bash. It activated because you were sprinting at full speed when you pressed melee - and you missed because of your aim. Shoulder Bash does a considerable amount of damage from the front, moreso than a simple melee, and knocks the enemy played back and disrupts their aim. From behind, Shoulder Bash is a one hit kill that also maintains your velocity and doesn't activate into an assassination.

It's not complicated at all - if you're sprinting at full speed you shoulder bash. If you aren't, you don't. If you miss then you suck, and if you make the tactical error of using that ability and die due to it, then that's simply a matter of skill level.

2) Recon controls have been totally abandoned

Personally, I don't understand why people want to naturally put themselves at a disadvantage of needing to either Claw or let go if the thumbstick to melee, but if you have the inability to adapt to the control schemes...

It's kind of your fault.

In any case, since controllers are now fully customisable this won't be an issue for long for you.

On the map. Halo 5 literally has glowing icons on the map, timers, and an announcer dedicated to telling people when a weapon spawns - if you can't find it, that really is your fault. Apart from the weapon pads, there are also weapons such as shotguns, scattershots, carbines, BR's etc. spread across the map, and it's your job to learn the map and know where weapons spawn.

4) Playlists are awful

It's true that Big Team isn't in the game - that'll be released later on. TS isn't being forced upon you, there's Breakout if you wish, and Team Arena has CTF games in it.

But Warzone? 9/10 of the enemies are 'easy' difficulty AI? Well, first of all, no, there's perhaps around 10 mobs scattered around the map at any given moment along with 2 or 3 bosses, the mobs being Heroic difficulty while the bosses basically instakilling anyone but the best who are trying to solo them. As for finding enemies, if you REALLY can't do that, there's somethign seriously wrong with your game sense. It shouldn't be hard for you to know where the enemies are...

A lot of your complaints seem to stem from a lack of understanding of the game's flow. That's fine, but it certainly isn't justification for stating that the game is ruined due to YOUR lack of understanding.

 no bleed through

You're wrong.
