  1. I have to admit, I am shocked and depressed by how many people want the Flood to come back.

The Halo games I have enjoyed the most, with the exception of Combat Evolved, have all been the games WITHOUT the Flood.

I might actually cry if the Flood come back for Halo 5.

  2. If you want a more in depth answer, read the Kilo-Five book trilogy. It starts with Halo: Glasslands and continues with Halo: The Thursday War, but I don't think the third book has been released yet. In any case, these books are what bridge the gap between Halo 3 and Halo 4.

  3. Call me crazy, but I actually really like Palmer. She's the only Spartan IV besides Thorne who I think could prove themselves worthy of the Spartan name. I wasn't too sure I'd like her in the beginning, but she's grown on me. Personally, I hope she gets a much bigger role in the main campaign of Halo 5.

  4. So after a fair bit of thinking and playing a TON of Spartan Ops, I'm starting to think that with the death of Cortana, John's new partner in crime could become Commander Sarah Palmer. The way she leads Fireteam Crimson is not that different from the way Cortana helped John.

While we would all like Cortana to return, I would rather the Chief partner up with Palmer than be paired with another AI.

  5. yeah I saw it tall- dude I hope we see something good for cortana in sp ops. I havent been able to go a single day without thinking about her- shes a fictional video game character for god sake! and shes affecting my day to day!!! congrats 343- please bring her back- and please let us know that you will- soon

You know, that point about Spartan Ops is a pretty good one. I think that would be the perfect way to set up Cortana's return. But maybe save it for Halo 5, should Spartan Ops return. That way, it serves as a prequel of sorts to the ending clip of her return.

  6. "death of cortana = death of halo"

That's honestly all that needs to be said. Halo without Cortana is like a sandwich that consists of two pieces of bread and nothing else

You know, I usually hate that equation, but having actually given it some real thought, I can't help but agree with it. Cortana is an integral part of the Halo formula, and Halo would not be the same without her. The Master Chief and Cortana have become one of those inseparable duos where it's either both of them, or none of them.

That said, I think given the goal of humanizing the Master Chief, that strength of partnership makes her "death" pretty much mandatory. And also makes it even more important that she does not return in Halo 5 (unless it's in a bonus legendary ending clip). The Master Chief needs a serious taste of life without her.

What would be really interesting, story wise, is if Halo 6 was a conflict between stopping Didact and saving Cortana. As in, make it seem like you can either stop Didact or save Cortana, not both. And to prove that his humanity is winning out over the soldier/machine side, have him choose to save Cortana. And then, through the kind of daring and luck the Master Chief is known for, have him do both anyway. That way, you can complete the humanizing arc by ending it on the point that our humanity is what gives us the greatest strength. :)

  7. I thought the ending was well executed. It was supposed to be dark, and frankly you don't always get what you were striving for. The fact that your main objective essentially failed only brings out the idea that things don't go according to plan. Halo 4 brings in a strong sense of reality that is hard to swallow for some.

They say Halo 5 will be darker, so don't expect Cortana back in the next game, if at all.

I'm thinking Cortana will be back in Halo 6. The only issue is how she could possibly come back. I see no evidence of being able to rationally restore Cortana, so 343 would need to pull some magic. But let's say there's a way to restore her. After they do it, considering AI's go rampant, they might (and this is a big might) make her human, or "give her life" in some way.

My reasoning? Why else would 343 introduce the Composer? It's an artifact that can turn life to data, and data to life.

    Thoughts?

I think making her human with the Composer is exactly what they set out to do.

My guess is that we'll learn of her possible return at the end of Halo 5, maybe as a small clip in the legendary ending.

  8. I'm confused about the title of this thread. "Why Cortana Was A Good Thing" is imho incorrect, because Cortana IS a good thing. Cortana is created by Dr. Halsey of her own personality, so Cortana is like a digitalized human. The composer digitalize lifeforms and can recreate them, but this proccess is buggy. We know these recreated lifeforms as "Prometheans"

Cortana was with her mad copies in this whole forerunner system where the composer was a part of it. So Cortana, as a digital lifeform, could be recreated as a promethean-style lifeform Cortana.

I wrote the title as it is to avoid spoilers. I figured that anyone who had beaten the campaign would know what I was talking about.

  9. So the one thing I'm noticing in Halo 4 Matchmaking is a distinct lack of attack/defend gametypes. Specifically, the absence of Single-Flag CTF, which was hands down my favorite multiplayer gametype since Halo 2. I miss it. I miss it badly. And after playing obscene amounts of Rush in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, I find myself feeling like I need Single-Flag CTF in Halo 4.

Anyone else feel like it needs to make a return?

  10. About the Chief/Cortana thing? Check out a thread I started: http://www.343industries.org/forum/topic/17116-opinion-why-cortana-was-a-good-thing/ That'll give you my thoughts on that particular aspect of the story.

Also, I would point out that the Chief was actually not on Reach when the Covenant invaded. He was not part of the ground team that was sent to guard the reactors. Fred-104 was the Spartan in charge of that op.

As far as John-117's luck is concerned, that ties in with the main point in my Cortana thread, which was that the time has come for change. John-117 has been the lucky/unstoppable badass for 3 amazing games, but it's time for his character to evolve into something more. To do that, he has to be thrust into a situation where not even his luck can save him. Hence, Cortana.

  11. Dude. Halo 4 JUST came out. Play it while you can.

    This.

Seriously. The game has barely been out a week, and 343 said when they announced Halo 4 that it would be the first in a new trilogy. Take solace in the fact you know it's coming at all.

I remember finishing Halo: CE in 2001 and only being able to hope there would be a sequel. God the wait for Halo 2 was painful...

(Also, totally unrelated, this is my 69th post. Heh heh heh. ;P)

(Yes, I am a child sometimes.)

  12. My opinion...

I hope 343 does NOT bring Cortana back, especially not as a human. When I learned of the human-digitization business in the campaign, the very first thing I thought of was how they might try to save Cortana from rampancy by turning her into a human. It's just too predictable to bring her back that way, and it robs the game of its dramatic integrity. In 99% of stories, when characters come back from the dead, I just want to shoot myself. People die. That's reality. Bringing a character back from the dead is painfully boring.

If I wanted reality, I'd live it. At least half the point of all fiction is to pull us out of reality for a moment, make us forget our troubles and have fun visiting worlds and times where the impossible becomes possible.

That said, I understand where you're coming from and while strict realism is obviously not a requirement of mine, I do require the story to be believable within it's own context. So long as a story follows its own rules, I generally don't have a problem when something seemingly outlandish happens. This is why I wouldn't have a problem with Cortana coming back as a human through the digitization process. Because the theory has already been established.

I'm honestly split 50/50 on whether or not she should come back. One way or the other though, I don't think it robs the story of it's dramatic integrity. I would go so far as to say that robbing any story of it's dramatic integrity is truthfully hard to do, provided the story follows its own rules. Again, since the possibility of her human return has been established, I wouldn't say it robs the story of it's dramatic integrity.

However, if she comes back immediately in Halo 5, that would rob the ending of Halo 4 its dramatic integrity. Because that's the writer essentially saying the ending of Halo 4 didn't matter. Much as I want her to come back, especially as a human, that version of her return would piss me off.

  13. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if they will ever make a 1 flag playlist. I say this only because I noticed there is no 1 flag option in custom games either.

Now that, that is straight up not cool. We need our single objective game-types! :(

  14. NO, lol, the cheif took the deaths of keys, and jhonson hard, i mean, looking back at jhonsons death, he almost fell apart right their if cortana hadnt gotten him back up,

it dosnt bother me that the cheif lost cortana(its been done before in halo 2) but 343 did it in their first game, also they made such a dark and driry atmosphere for their halo games,... remindes me of the **** on the life time channel....

wtf no No NO, the chief almost lost it when jhonson died!, your could tell in his movements, if cortana hadent been their if halo wasnt about to fire then the would of been about to express more but no he had to get moving.

and yes, **** me3 worst ending ever made the whole series crap.

The death of Johnson was doubtlessly hard on the Master Chief. The deaths of his fellow Spartans is hard on the Master Chief. But my point is that as hard as they are, John knows how to deal with the loss of fellow soldiers. The "death" of Cortana was much different, as I've stated before, because his relationship with her is the closest thing he's had to a relationship based on mutual affection and love. So losing her would be even harder on him than losing Johnson.

  15. The only advantages the DMR has over the BR is range and accuracy. In terms of raw damage, they are identical.

And as I am more of a sniper type, for me DMR all the way.

  16. All I'm saying is they need to at least introduce the flood for next gen, so we can see how they look with better graphics. Even if its just for one mission.

343 stated there wasn't going to be any Flood in halo 5, but they never said it wasn't going to be in the trilogy.

As I said before, halo's whole plot revolves around humans stopping the flood for good and bringing peace to the galaxy by reclaiming the mantle. Cortana will be back, the Arbiter needs to come back, the flood is the main point of the story, and didact is still hell bent on digitizing the human race(make them promithians), to combat the FLOOD.

Just because halo's 1-3 dealt with the flood, it doesn't mean that's the last we seen of them. There's still other halo installations out there. The first trilogy dealt with the human/covenant war which is now at a cease fire. This second trilogy deals with how humans will reclaim the mantle and become the caretakers/protectors of the galaxy.

And as I said before, we have already stopped The Flood in Halo 3! Them showing up as enemies in the new trilogy would be pointlessly redundant. They can show up in a CGI cutscene/flashback as part of the Human/Forerunner story, as our first contact with them is what led to the Human/Forerunner war. But the story of the new trilogy is about the Human's finally taking their intended place as protectors of the galaxy. We've already proven we can defeat the Flood without sacrificing the rest of the galaxy (something the Forerunners could not do), so now it's time to prove that we are better than the Forerunners to their face.

  17. To those saying cortana won't come back because she says she can't in the conversation after the nuke, think about this. IF we assume she is metastable (basically a person from what I've read on these forums) she is now capable of telling a lie. maybe she figured if she told him a way to get her back, she knew he'd at least try, and maybe she figured she didn't want him to take that risk. Does that make sense to anyone?

    Makes perfect sense.

  18. I could honestly see the story branching off either way: she returns in some form or fashion, or she doesn't as a lesson to humanize Chief. Some folks mentioned the possibility of her return as an organic/human woman. Others mentioned the possibility of some fragment of her existing in full on rampancy (thus making her an enemy and possible servant to the Didact--who, for some reason I don't think it truly perma-dead yet). Those are cool ideas. I have to say I hope she does make a return in some way--well handled ofcourse. But no matter what, since this series is mostly about the development of John's character, and since Cortana is basically the key to his humanity, she'll play an important role in future games (whether she's alive or dead).

I don't really agree that Cortana returning to the series would definitively be detrimental, cheesy, or unoriginal. I think it could be a very good thing (if handled well....and I think the folks at 343 are up to it). There's certainly enough reason to believe it's possible so it's not like we'd be invoking space magic to make it happen. It's not a necessity to the future happiness we all hope John to have someday--but it'd definitely be a super awesome plus! :D Personally, I'd be really, really happy to see her return in the series (though hopefully their relationship would undergo some kind of dynamic change--I agree that things shouldn't go back to being the way they always were.) I think her being a temporary enemy then eventually becoming metastable or even human/organic would be pretty cool! And if I'm allowed a small miniscle moment of shameless shipping, it would make my heart smile to see a happy ending with John and Cortana alive and well.

My personal opinion is that a happy ending is the new original. Everybody's pulling out these bittersweet, emo-drenched, kinda-depressing, slightly pessimitic, "nobody-gets-what-they-want-because-lifes-just-not-like-that" sacraficial endings......so, it'd be a refreshing change of pace to get a relatively happy one where the lovers/best friends/partners/ or-whatever-else-they-pass-for are reunited and...well...happy. I endured Mass Effect 3 with dignity, appreciation, and respect....but to be honest, I've filled my artistic integrity quota for the next 5 years. Now I just want happy. ;)

Oh God, speak not the name! There was no excuse for that ending, none whatsoever. The extended cut made the ending of ME3 tolerable, but that's it, and the fact that it was necessary in the first place is unforgivable. It kills me to say, but the Mass Effect series is pretty much dead to me, and Mass Effect 3 was the last BioWare game I will buy until I have assurances they won't pull the same **** twice.

Now, with that out of my system...

IF Cortana returns, I would want her to return as a human and become a legitimate love interest for John, so that he finally can have a true and fully human life. I also think that it would be a good way to round out the humanizing thing if both of them are learning how to be truly human together. Plus, it would just be plain sweet. ;)

  19. Flood somehow needs to be shown for next gen. That's the only reason I want it to come back. There is something in the next Halo installation(05 or 07?) that's going to make a big impact that will make the game darker. (Game wouldn't be called Halo without one being in the game). Graveminds come to fruition when enough sentient life has been consumed by the flood in a given area. That's when flood becomes highly intelligent(Gravemind).

The whole plot of halo is the humans finding a way to stop the flood infestation and reclaiming the mantle, and the going to be a lot of jealous and hell bent races on destroying the human race. The only question is how does the Chief do it? Plus Arbiter is the only character I know that will bring peace to the humans and Covenant. What about the prophets? Weren't they allied with humans hundred thousand years ago while fighting the flood? What's their role?

But we already stopped The Flood in Halo 3. That was the whole point of Bungie sending the Gravemind to the Ark and having us fire the new Halo ring that was being built there. Us stopping the Flood was half the plot of the original trilogy. This is a new trilogy, and therefore needs a new story.
