My crazy theory: Master chief crash lands on onyx to discover that he has been launched thousands of years in to the past by the closing of the portal on his half of the ship.he is found unconscious by the forerunners, when he wakes the forerunners ask him where he came from and why he is here. after answering the forerunners, yet to even encounter the flood, have a meeting to decide whether this armoured stranger is telling the truth or not.those who believe him begin work on the halo array however tose who didnt just stood and watched. after a few days pass a strange rock lands on onyx which happens to be a flood escape pod that was launched as a ditch effort by the grave mind to endure the firing of Halo.

It had followed the Dawn while staying jusst far enough away that cortana wouldnt notice it. the forerunners were ignorant at first and didnt act in violence to the parasite.until news finally reached the leaders of the forerunnersof the serious threat that the flood posed,not to the planet, but the universe.then they fully put thier trust in master chief as he led them to battle against the flood.Some of the forerunners followed him to battle others went straight to work on colleting the dna of sentinent species, that they may be preserved on shield worlds.Others bulit the 7 Halos and the Ark.
