The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 studio CD Projekt has acquired the Boston-based independent studio The Molasses Flood, which made the games The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow. The team was founded in 2014 by veterans of the BioShock, Halo, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band series.

CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski said The Molasses Flood will "bring a lot of talent and determination" to the company going forward. The team will be working on a new "ambitious" game set in an existing CD Projekt universe, but no other details were divulged. Presumably this would be a new Witcher or Cyberpunk game, but we don't know for sure.

CD Projekt has acquired The Molasses Flood

The Molasses Flood studio head Forrest Dowling added, "When CD Projekt approached us about the possibility of working together, we saw an incredible opportunity to reach a much wider audience through a collaboration with a company we love, creating games in worlds we love."

According to a press release, The Molasses Flood will retain its independence and autonomy as it works in "close cooperation" with CD Projekt Red. In its own statement, The Molasses Flood said the studio will be able to hire many more people thanks to its sale to CD Projekt. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The Molasses Flood gets its name from the 1919 disaster where a storage tank holding more than 2 million gallons of molasses broke open in Boston. More than 20 people died.

This is CD Projekt's second big acquisition of 2021, following its buyout of Canadian studio Digital Scapes, which co-developed Cyberpunk 2077 with CD Projekt Red.

In other news, CD Projekt recently delayed the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 to 2022.

In addition to being known for The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt runs the DRM-free games store GOG.
