Both Sony and Microsoft have issued statements regarding the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, a murder case that captured national and worldwide attention over police accountability. Chauvin was found guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd. Both companies stated this was an important step, but said there is more work to do for racial justice.

Sony issued a statement through Twitter, calling it a "first step" and stating that it would continue addressing racial inequality. Microsoft issued a similar statement through its official blog, saying this was a "step forward" but that the country has a long journey to establish justice and equality.

Microsoft Statement:

Our nation has a long journey ahead before it establishes the justice and equity that Black Americans deserve. The murder of George Floyd is a tragedy and a crime, and no jury can bring him back to life or reverse the pain and trauma experienced by his family and still felt across the country and around the world. Today’s verdict is a step forward in acknowledging painful truths and for the continued cause of defeating racism and fighting discrimination. Our company remains committed to the continued path ahead.

Derek Chauvin was tried and found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, in the death of George Floyd, CBS News reports. The case caught international attention due to a viral video caught by an onlooker, which showed Chauvin--in his capacity as a former Minneapolis police officer--bearing his weight on Floyd's neck as the victim said he couldn't breathe and called for his mother.

Sentencing for Chauvin will take place in about eight weeks. The other three officers on the scene, who have been charged with aiding and abetting, will be tried in August.
