What makes a YouTube star?

There are a lot of factors, but it all boils down to quality content. With youtube's current algorithm, the more videos you upload over a shorter period, the more youtube will promote said videos. Youtube also promotes newer videos that have been released within the span of a week.

If people like your videos, and you network with others. People who watch a person in a network's videos tends to drift over and at the very least sub to those the creator has networked with, due to promoting each other, being in each other's videos, etc. etc.

People also tend to 'stay' watching their own things. Gamers who watch competitive gameplay of a single game will probably keep on watching that. People who watch troll videos will probably keep on watching that. People watching League will keep watching that. People watching CoD will keep watching that. The trade-off between doing a video that other people have already done and is obviously successful, is that you might not be noticed in favor of people already doing the videos.

Cross-promo are best.

What separates them from a normal user?

This really has two answers.

If you're talentless

First of all, find an overly-generic game that people absolutely adore.

Second, pretend you're an absolute expert at it, no matter how little you know about it. Make wild claims, speak for an audience of 12-13 year olds.

I would give examples of Youtube channels that display these characteristics and got big, but I don't really want to get banned. But I can say Halo4Follower and Halo5Follower (same person) come under this, doubt that I'll get banned for saying that by the off-topic Gestapo (joking).

If you're normal.

Express a talent you have, or develop it a talent.

Here's some examples.

This is for talented people who know their stuff. Of course you won't be able to afford this, but there's some very developed skills in the making of all of these films.

Become part of a big community and make some big additions to it.

If you have the trait of making others laugh, here's the sort of stuff you can do with little effort - just a decent computer and screen capping.
