So, there's been a demand for the return of the SMG, but a debate springs from that want: Which SMG? The Halo 3 SMG or Halo 3: ODST's Silenced SMG.

Halo 3's SMG would be less powerful than the AR and so, if put into loadouts, would probably be a sidearm choice. It would probably be nerfed to be balanced with the Magnum. This decision also warrants whether or not it should be dual-wieldable... I'd personally like to leave dual-wielding behind, given that it construes the Golden Triangle by disabling melee and grenades in exchange for more firepower.

As for the Silenced SMG, it could be balanced into a primary weapon choice, differing from the AR in rate-of-fire, recoil "climb", and a different reload speed. Most importantly, it would be a fully automatic loadout weapon capable of zoom. This could also give the possibility of ODST's "Automag" pistol, which could be a second UNSC loadout sidearm (differing from H4's Magnum in range, rate-of-fire, and damage-per-shot, so it wouldn't be pointless). The "silenced" aspect of these weapons is purely of an audible nature and wouldn't give any unfair "stealthy" advantages, as you could still be seen as normal on motion trackers and the sound can still be heard.

What do you think? Which SMG would you prefer and why?

Hopefully they could do both! I mean one can zoom in and hit at a distance and is silenced, and the other is dual-wieldable, and powerful.

But if I had to choose it would depend on if dual wielding is possible in Halo Xbox One. If it is then I would go with Halo 3's SMG. If not then ODST's SMG all the way.

I'd prefer ODST's SMG, regardless of whether or not dual-wielding is a possibility. It was a more useful weapon, and my favourite automatic weapon second to the Plasma Rifle, as every other automatic weapon in the entire series lacks a scope.

There's not really any point in bringing back the traditional SMG: we already have three spawning weapons which are perfectly god at close range in the form of the Suppressor, Assault Rifle and Storm Rifle, and with the Suppressor in particular already having such short range and low accuracy, there's not really any point adding another weapon with exactly the same specialisation.

However, here's a thought on the silenced version which could make it work. What if even though it was still just as weak and inaccurate as it was in ODST, firing it didn't reveal your position on the motion tracker, and you didn't get directional hitmarkers on your HUD? That way it would be much harder for people to tell where they were being shot from, especially if you were firing from somewhere above them. That way it would make a really good weapon for stealth attacks and for catching opponents off-guard, but would be easily beaten by most other weapons in a straight fight - creating a degree of balance, as you'd need to work really hard to avoid being spotted.

I like that, but I think that the AR and Storm Rifle should gain a bit of accuracy in return for the resurrection of the SMG and Plasma Rifle, both of which would be for closer range than the AR's. IRL, AR's are viable automatic solutions for ranged foes while SMG's are perfect for CQB. And as for the Suppressor, it works as an SMG. They would just need to bring in a more accurate automatic weapon.

If 343 do not go the route I suggested, I would love for your idea to be implemented. Perhaps a Tactical Package could be added that eliminates the directional indicator resulting from your shots if nothing else. Perfect for Snipers who miss that headshot.
