We should praise you good sir. So far the only person I have seen who has understood some reasoning, and didn't remain determined to hate the game.

Ha, I don't hate it at all, I think it's brilliant! A few issues but a great game otherwise, and a good start to another (hopefully) awesome trilogy

How do Cortana and the Chief know that the Forerunner they meet is in fact the Didact?

Maybe I missed it but Cortana seems to just pluck the name out of the air, and then everyone (even the Librarian, with whom they've had no contact) refers to him as such for the rest of the game. It seems as though there's no canonical way for them to know that this guy is the Didact until the meet the Librarian and she lays it out for them

Their in-game logic seems to be "I read about a Forerunner called the Didact once, I just met a Forerunner, therefore that Forerunner is the Didact" - no dice, this doesn't work

he sayshe is the didact in the fist cutscene with him and later the librarian calls him the didact.

Well I have seem to uncover this.

The Didact comes out of his shell thinger and makes the Prometheans bow. The Covenant also do this and all say "Didact". Then after the cutscene (With subtitles on). Cortana says "That...Didact. He maniupulated..." So it seems to be clear that Cortana learned his name because of the chant of his name. She also shows confusion when saying his name. Then she tells Chief and now the name is known.

Bingo! Cortana can translate covenant speech and literature. Explained in the books and previous games by bungie themselves, so question answered.

Cortana telling chief to let go of the buttons that released the didact she obviously knew it wasnt a satelitte at that piont and in the novels it says A.I.s can process hundreds of thousands of bits of information in seconds i'm sure she knew from constantly getting information from what forerunner system she inhabited,if the Storm knew of him from scribblings on the wall im sure Cortana could found out actually being in the system. The bigger plot hole i think is the story of the two didacts and how all the events line up in the timeline.Hurts my head.

More supposition, doesn't cut it. We've found the scene where he is directly referred to as the Didact by the Covenant in front of Cortana & the Chief - that is what we were looking for, the canonical event that clued them in, problem solved

EDIT - I say "we", really I mean "I was looking for".

and I should really crack on with the books, a second Didact is news to me

Cortana could read it through the system while Chief had his hands on the controls. She can transfer data out of his suit when he touches objects. The controls had data stored about the Didact.
