Halo 4 Progression System

BRING BACK THE HALO 2 RANKING SYSTEM! :wallbash:

I have been reading all the posts on this topic and it sounds like a majority of you never played halo 2. Halo 2 was the only game that had a good trueskill ranking system and Halo 3 was a cushioned version of it.

I say this because in Halo 2 leveling up in each playlist was difficult and rewarding to say the least. I was both a competitive and custom game kind of person, but I always separated the two mind sets. Sometimes you want to play for fun and just goof off, which is why people would either play custom or non ranked playlists, which generally no one minded, but then you also wanted to play competitive. If you have ranked up in Halo 2, you would not understand the pride felt in each level, and I believe the levels measured accurately a players skills. I believe the highest level I got to was a 36 in halo 2, partly due to the increase in modders that were so popular back then. It was rare to actually see a level 50 and anyone that was a 40+ had the skills of professional players. Ofcourse losing a game was the worst because chances are you might level down, but it is what made winning so rewarding, not only knowing that you would level up, but the other player would level down.

Now to address my issue with post halo 2 ranking systems, starting with halo 3. Halo 3 had an okay ranking system, but it was way to easy and made so that more players could feel accomplished in reaching a high rank. It took me around a week to rank up to a 48, 45 and 47 in halo 3 with ease, and after that I did not even want to play anymore. Everyone on here is praising Halo 3 ranking system, but it was terrible in comparison to halo 2, I saw numerous people who lacked skill reach high 40's and even 50. Halo 3 is actually the reason I switched from a hardcore Halo players to a hardcore Call of Duty player. For those complaining about having the problem of getting matched up with players who lacked skill, if you are that competitive why are you trying to enter ranked matches without a solid team of players you are familiar with ? In Halo 2 it was rare to find any high level competitive player entering a ranked match without 3 players they knew and played with on a regular, because it required a higher level of teamwork to win and compete.

The gaming industry is taking a complete dive in the competitive market to suit the "recreational" players, but lets be honest, they want to allow people who aren't good at Halo to be able to feel like a top dog. What is the point of me trying to obtain a high level, when someone who isn't that good can play 1000 hours to obtain the same rank and consider themselves "Top Dog."

The argument that a person should just know they are good and not need to show it off is the worst argument that I have heard. Not only in halo, but in any aspect of life, do people not compete to obtain a status to show off to people ? One that not just anyone can reach, which makes in meaningful and worthwhile. Part of the reason I wanted Halo 4 was because I thought it was going back to that trueskill ranking, and if not I will not be purchasing it.

As for Halo Reach....Pure garbage, i'm pretty sure I threw it in a random corner of my room after a week.

Everyone calls competitive gamers "whiners" because we want trueskill, but the whole reason they switched is because people that aren't good at the game cried because they couldn't rank up. If you aren't that good, than accept it and either go practice or play non-ranked matchmaking. Most of the people arguing against trueskill rankings are probably terrible at the game, or even just average, so they don't understand the desire to want to reach the top levels.

To sum it up, trueskill is avoided so sorry halo players can feel good about themselves by grinding to the top, rather than actually being good. Halo 2 was the best ranking system and best multiplayer out of all of them, and they need to release the anniversary addition.

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS. :respect:

To everyone who keeps saying this was the best or this was the best. THERE IS NONE that is the best. Those who played Halo 2 stated that it was darn near imossible to get to the highest rank. And to say it should be based off of winning/versus losing is cr@p. That is becuase, you losing doens't mean you suck. It means you didn't win, that's all it meant! Until someone can show me a true ranking system that reflects how you play in accordance with rules and wins/loss I will NOT Agree!

Everyone wants this old ranking system back so much that they won't even give Halo 4 a chance. Just enjoy the game for what it is and stop worrying about it. That is the one thing I hate about the Halo fan base : there are a lot of complaining people.

Actually a lot of us really like this game. I love it, but having no real ranking system and the absence of competitive and social playlists (which have been standard in every Halo game) is a big disappointment for me. So I'd like to express my opinion in hopes of 343 bringing these features back. I still think the game is dope!

I love the game play. The graphics are sweet. I've been really enjoying it, BUT I miss the ranking system from Halo 2/3 and the social/competitive playlists. This is what made Halo so addicting in the past. Winning a close match was such a thrill at higher levels.

I never made it to 50 in anything. Closest I got was a 46. Not reaching 50 was no big deal. I wasn't but hurt over not being the most bad ass Halo player out there. Its fun to see where you place among the community. I'd argue (besides the gameplay) that's what made Halo such an addictive shooter in the first place and what set it apart from every other shooter out there.

Part of the problem is that many people see Skill being rather you win or lose. Yes you need Skill to win, but any online match can be manipulated to where it allows anyone to win. Therefore I am strongly against the idea of the skill system being strictly about wins and losses. It needs to utilize it, but it also needs to use how you perform in the match in accordance with the objective. If the objective is score a ball or flag and all you and your team has are kills then you won't get Anything from the game. However if the obective is to out kill the other team then it's fine to have a cr@p ton of kills.

Keep in mind something, winning and losing isn't everything it's how you play the game. "I'd rather lose than win un-fairly," and yes if anyone ever meets me in a match I will put that statemen to the test.

I'm pissed.

343I! WHERE IS THE SKILL RANK SYSTEM? WHAT IS THIS SR BULLCRAP THAT IS JUST A REACH RANK SYSTEM.

This game so much awesome stuff that the other stuff they leave out can impact everything.

Thanks 343i for giving us a system that tells us how much we play, instead of how skillful we are.

Well, they better make some concessions on skill...i want to be placed not progressing, i dont care about unlocks, i want to show how good i am.

Sova you know I agree with you. I need to see how much emphasis is put on winning and performance/skill bonuses, because any new system that doesn't reward players more for their performance/skills, and winning, you might as well call it Halo Reach Matchmaking 2.0.

I agree with all 3. Give us a 1-50 in game system and I think you will find the competitive players are done criticizing a good game. This game has sooooo much potential and I believe it can be the best Halo yet. I think I stand for most of the competitive players that prefer competition with rewards compared to unlocking virtual armor. To each his own and I think the ranking system would at least get the competitive players off 343's back.

I find this thing with getting better stuff by playing more pretty strange. I mean, how do you even come up with something like that for an FPS game? How is it fair that someone new to the game has to fight players that not only has more experience, but also better weapons and super-powers?

EDIT: Also, what is this with Doritos and Moutain Dew? Doesn't Halo make enough money? Is it really so unthinkable that everyone who bought the game should play it under the same conditions?

Stop complaining about the Ranking system.. Just be happy this game is even coming out. You know how good you are, and that's what matters. So what if it's Reach's ranking system? Granted it sucked, but still. Just have fun, that's what games are for.

Yes, for you. There are other people who don't like wasting their time with party games. I already have board games, I already know where my play money casinos are at. I want a competitive experience where players try and mental stimulation exists.

BRING BACK THE HALO 2 RANKING SYSTEM! :wallbash:

Anniversary would just have sprint and a similar ranking system. This issue is deeper than just release an old version. Look at Halo:CE Anniversary... It absolutely failed as a multiplayer title. None of the guys that still LAN Halo:CE even bothered with it when they saw it.

Halo 2 did NOT have the perfect ranking system! If you want to argue other wise I say give me Hard Core Evidence!

Finally got a new Spec, went Wetwork. I can't wait for the perk I get with it. Level 54 as I am typing this, hopefully I'll be Operator by tonight. I use the Suppressor, Boltshot, Pulse Grenades, Hologram, Mobility, and Ammo.

All this talk about the ranking system. I don't mind it, and none of you guys complaining about it can do a thing to change it. I honestly got confused in Reach's rank system. Glad they didn't keep it. Plus, Halo 4's ranking system is a lot easier to keep up with. What's the problem with it?

I'm all for new changes and improvements to Halo, but 343 is screaming about how they want to ensure matchmaking is "competitive". Nothing screams competitive, to me, like a rank system based off of skill so we can have something to compete with one another. Also, it will keep the games more balanced because the same truly ranked players will be matched with players of their caliber and not players much worse or much better. I still love Halo 4 and admire 343's work, but I don't have that same "itch" to get on matchmaking like I did in the Halo 2 days.

I agree with all of you. They need to bring back Trueskill ranking instead of this progressions thing. Its no different than Call of Duty's prestige and "ranking" which only just shows how much you've played instead of actual skill to achieve the rank. This is what seperated Halo from other competetive multiplayer shooters. Halo 2 and 3 was perfect. In Halo 3 I was a Colonel grade 2 with a skill rank of 40. Back then the feeling of achievement by being rewarded a higher skill rank as you fight your way from the bottom was huge. Not to mention the matchmaker took skill rank into account to match you up with players of equal skill, instead a mishmosh of lower and higher skilled players in one lobby like how Call of Dutys match maker is set up.

First off what we currently have is NOT the ranking system. Where do you see that 343 industries states that this IS the new ranking system? Yes we "level up," but you are therefore determining that, that means that, that is indeed the ranking system when 343 industries has not yet released one. The last I heard of it from them was them stating that they are going through the process with very fine tooth comb and doing a great amoutn of tuning.

Secondly, Halo 2 and 3 were NOT "perfect," far from it! Skill has very little to do with you winning or loosing a match. Such as in team variants, if your team is awful then no matter how "skilled" you are you WILL LOSE! Does that mean that you therefore have no skill? No it means it was a bad game and that is all.

Skill is supposed to be about your ability to play in accordance with rules of the game type. If you go +50 in a objective game type but you had little to no score points then you honestly suck. Your in-ability to score or refusal to score shows your lack of both intelligence and skill. Any one can throw grenades into a group of people and get kills. It takes guts to run in there and attempt the objective.

The only thing I don't like about this progression system is that it's xp based. This tends to lead to AFK boosters and good grief I've seen wayyyyyyyyyyyy too many of them.

That is true and untrue in the same statement. What we *OG playa* want is separation from the casual players. If we're running solo, due to my ISP I have to, is to have COMPETENT team mates and have good quality games. I definitely believe that there should be separate ranked and social lists for EXACTLY this reason.

If you want the best and most rewarding Halo experience then Halo 2 Ranking system is the only choice. That is all, no argument, close case.

JIP effectively kills that though since H2 system was based lots more heavily, 92% wins 8% k/d, on ability to win consistently.

im at rank 41 and a lot of emblems are still missing.. any chance the phoenix on the shield has yet to come for me? ive used it since halo 2..

also.. while its an m rated game, its more intended to be a fun game that anyone can pick up and play. halo was never really intended for hardcore gaming alone, while there are those of us who are hardcore, the ranking system isnt a problem for most people. the good majority of people actually. the ones who arent on this site. the only thing i wish it had was to pair you up with and against similar skilled people.

Again. The important thing for Halo isn't to cater for 10.000 players who want a ranking system. Most people go into matchmaking alone, and a ranking system like H3 Trueskill would likely only frustrate and harm them. Halo need to make the game more appealing for ALL. The CASUALS. This will make the online experience more fun for all.

You do remember that H3 had ranked and social lists right. Oh wait, that's when the game was done correctly, not this stinking pile of crap that 343 has put out. It's amazing to me after hearing literally hundreds of thousands of folks wanting separate ranked and social lists back in the game that they failed to put that in. Nothing like a big ol' %^&* you to the folks that you owe your livelihood to. Thanx 343, appreciate it jerks.
