  1. Good evening fellow forumites!! It's been quite some time since I had something to share with the forum. I decided to start back off with a bit of news that I am pretty sure will effect a large portion of our community, and perhaps a large portion of people that our forum dwellers may know and love. Enjoy! Beginning on January 1st 2020, Microsoft will no longer offer Security Patches and Hotfixes for Windows 7 OS's. This is common knowledge for many of us, who were warned of the imposing EOL (end of life) cycle for Windows 7 years ago. But this time, the EOL has taken a slight turn for the worst. In a recent publication this week, Microsoft has confirmed that it will be charging a "monthly" subscription fee for Windows 7 beginning in January, to supply ongoing users of Windows 7 with monthly updates and critical fixes. While this may not be that big of an issue, as pricing has not yet been released, it does beg a few questions. 1. How many vulnerabilities and exploits are there currently, that Microsoft has yet to fix? 2. How many bugs and exploits does Microsoft plan to fix before their "payday" kicks off? 3. Given this type of instance, how can we the consumer be guaranteed that ANY fix we obtain before 2020, isn't a way to increase or generate the need for the subscription? Many users of Windows 7 have refused to make the switch to Windows 10 (OS as a Service) due to it's limited compatibility with older software, issues with various Direct X elements of older games, and it's overall UI and service type features. While Windows 10 is a great way to breathe new life into aging technology, for those who rely on a stable solid OS to run various older editing softwares, video captures and general work within older archtypes of applications, Windows 10 is a crawl and in most cases, the things you wat to do cannot be done without constant crashes. On top of that, Windows 10 is an ongoing operating system that completely changes the way it handles almost everything, everytime an update or feature is released. Some even have rendered the OS unusable at times. Generally speaking, Microsoft has always had a good relationship with consumers regarding it's OS's and fixes for issues. However, the main issue SHOULD be, is that Microsoft is expecting to get paid for fixing shotty software issues for a product YOU ALREADY PAID FOR! To put that into perspective, a car manufacturer would NEVER expect the consumer to turn their car into a dealership for a malfunctioning part and expect you to pay for it. Even if the car is 25 years old, the manufacturer guarantees that any original equipment that is found to be malfunctioning due to manufacturing, is covered and you pay nothing. They pay for it, cause it's their critical error. Since when has it become the fault and burden of the consumer to pay for a fix to something that was broken or incomplete? I understand that all vulnerabilities and exploits are not readily identified. Most take years or decades to uncover and find only once a system has been compromised. But why should I pay Microsoft to fix a security or code issue that I had nothing to do with? And if I am a small business owner (some forum peeps might be) what am i supposed to do about the software i already bought? Should I allow MS to strongarm me into upgrading to an OS that most likely won't support my older POS applications or busniness configurations? And at what point can I sue or seek damages if there is a breach in my system, and that Microsoft failed to issue a fix, because they were greedy and wanted to get paid for it ahead of time? It makes no logical sense. Microsoft had initially tried spitballing this idea with Windows 10. initially trying to sell upgrades and updates for the service ats a charge. That idea was quickly snuffed. Again, I understand that january 2020 is the hard deadline for fixes and patches, I really do get that. And at that point, it becomes our problem if we choose to continue using a product that they no longer support. But my concern is that Microsoft has a backlog of fixes and exploits that they have not yet properly fixed and obviously have no team currently working on uncovering as many as possible before the deadline. 40% of the market still uses Windows 7 for christ sake! Anyway if you want to learn more about the service that is coming, follow the link below. I would love to hear your comments and feedback on this! https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2018/09/08/microsoft-windows-7-monthly-charge-windows-10-free-upgrade-cost/

  10. Ok so as the title says, I'm looking to see if there would be any interest in a Windows 10 Introduction and Walkthrough as well as an Xbox One Integration Introduction and Review. Windows 10 is right around the corner and I'm sure lot's of members alike are either waiting to see what this new OS and Xbox thing ends up being before they decide to upgrade from their Windows 7 or Vista/XP setups, or taking the plunge head first. Basically I want to do a video showcasing Windows 10 features as well as the Xbox One Streaming features so members of the community can see first hand how everything plays out and works. And maybe, you may learn a few cool tricks along the way or find help solving an issue. If there is interest and you would like to add a suggestion for the video content, please post it up and let me know. I have about 3 weeks to finalize the format and go over the content before I make the video.

  14. Microsoft has begun taking applications to join a new development team to work within its Xbox division. This new development team seems to be primarily focused on dealing with systems relating to the Kinect and the enhancement thereof. After reading the full job listing one can come to the conclusion that Microsoft is looking for a strong team that can push the Kinect to its limits. Microsoft also seems to realize that the future of Xbox gaming may not lie in the Kinect as can be seen in this excerpt in the job listing: "If you want a comfortable, standard-role job at Microsoft with no ambiguity or risk, please don’t apply." Still, this listing implies Microsoft is looking to greatly enhance the experience provided by the Kinect. "But if you’re passionate about the potential for Kinect to continue to revolutionize entertainment and are a seasoned software engineer with the skills to prototype and build the future of premium Kinect-powered experiences, we have a growing team of talented people who want to take entertainment into the future." 16. Some recent Console news for you! Recently, Playstation turned 20 years old! For this special occasion, Playstation will be turning one of their PS4's into a PS1, only in colors though! To go further on this topic, a recent GameSpot article said this, "Sony and Microsoft may be rivals in the console space, but that hasn't stopped top Xbox boss Phil Spencer from sending some well wishes to PlayStation for its recent 20th anniversary. @PlayStation Congrats on 20 years of success with PS. #20YearsOfPlay — Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) December 4, 2014 The PlayStation brand celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, following the Original PlayStation's release in Japan on December 3, 1994. The Xbox is a younger platform. It was initially introduced in 2001, meaning its 20th anniversary won't come until 2021. To celebrate the PlayStation's 20th anniversary, Sony earlier this week announced a limited-edition PlayStation 4 modeled after the Original PlayStation. Only 12,300 units will be made, and you'll be able to preorder one starting on Saturday, December 6." (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/top-xbox-boss-congratulates-sony-on-playstation-s-/1100-6423974/) I may not be the biggest fan of Playstation, but it makes me happy that gaming has gone this far!
  17. Microsoft has announced the newest version of Windows, Windows 10! Wait... What?! You may not believe this, but Microsoft has announced Windows 10, no, not Windows 9, Windows 10. IGN.com reported the news, hailing a list of new features like improved flexibility, app windowing on the desktop, and more. Also, they have a new multitasking feature implemented, allowing people to do two things at once, sort of like on the Xbox One's pinning feature. A program for those who want to test the new OS first has also been revealed, when this will launch is currently unknown. The system is set to launch in 2015, a confirmed date has yet to be revealed for this as well. Below is an example screenshot of the new UI menu. 19. Microsoft recently announced that unfortunately after the recent acquisition of Nokia, 18,000 employees will be fired and forced into unemployment within the next year, the majority in the Nokia department but some in the Xbox department as well. If you hadn't heard, Microsoft recently bought out and adopted the Nokia brand of phones and electronics for 72 Billion USD, and they will be laying off a large amount of employees, though the number wasn't expected to be this large. GameSpot.com reports that Microsoft has revealed that the number is right at 18,000 jobs being affected. About 13,000 of these are in Nokia, but the Xbox Marketing Team will also be affected heavily. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella did say that new jobs would be opened up, not stating how many, and that employees will be offered some basic assistance in finding new employment opportunities. This is the largest layoff event in the history of Microsoft, making about a 14% cut into the total amount of 100,000 or so employees. Investors surprisingly had a positive response in the first hours, however the stock quickly dropped soon after. More details will be made available soon, and I will update the article when we receive news. View attachment: X1.jpg Leave your response to the layoffs below, and what you think Microsoft should do specifically to help it's laid off employees. Thanks for reading guys, see you next time.

  21. First and foremost the Microsoft E3 Press Conference was fantastic! Full of surprises (Ahem, the Conker Character in Project Spark, and Crackdown 3), and I have to say it was very enjoyable for something I'm not usually into watching. Now onto Halo. Halo 5: Guardians Beta On Halo Waypoint, it states that the Halo 5: Guardians Beta is scheduled to run from December 27, 2014 - January 22, 2015. Requirements: - You must be 17 or older to participate. - The Beta requires the Halo: The Master Chief Collection game disc to play. - Xbox One, internet and Xbox Live Gold membership required (obviously). I'm not sure how you actually get into the Beta firsthand. On the Page it states that participating in the beta unlocks content in both the Master Chief Collection, and Halo: Nightfall, and that the "Exclusive Items" will carry over into the Halo 5: Guardians game. Halo 5: Guardians releases sometime in late 2015 (the release date has not been announced, as stated on Waypoint). Halo: Nightfall Halo: Nightfall is a 5 Episode Live Action Series with episodes releasing on a weekly basis. The story as quoted from Waypoint: "A strange and treacherous world exposes elite UNSC operatives to a much deeper danger in this live action series from 343 Industries and Scott Free Productions. Executive-produced by Ridley Scott, Scott Free TV President David Zucker, and directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan ("Battlestar Galactica," "Pillars of the Earth," "Heroes"), Halo: Nightfall is an exciting new story for Halo fans and fresh audiences alike." During E3 I remember the lady from 343i stating that the show will have the Character from the Halo 2: Anniversary/Master Chief Collection Trailer, and the Halo 5: Guardians teaser art. Though I don't know if that's true, so don't take my word for it. On Waypoint it says that it'll be on Xbox One, and Windows 8.1 (at least it says they're required), but I'm sure the episodes will also be viewable on most Online Video sites, like Youtube. As of now I don't think the launch date has been announced, but please tell me if it has. *Pertaining to both the Beta, and Halo: Nightfall, Waypoint states that the dates, content, and features are subject to change.* SOURCE: HaloWaypoint.com - Thoughts? Concerns? Tacos?

  24. This April update brings improvements to your Friends list, GameDVR quality, new audio settings and much more. Neogaf user, Banjo-Kazooie recently revealed the improvements set to launch with the new update coming to the Xbox One in April. The update (referred to in his post as 'Update 1404') includes a plethora of new improvements some of which will not be available in the initial 1404 update. The updates and improvements coming to with the update are as follows: Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently. Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This actually was one of the most frequently requested features from the first preview wave and we made it a priority to include it in the April update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list. We’ll also add the ability to view friends’ most popular apps. Blu-ray 50 Hz video output support for content recorded at 50 Hz will resolve video playback issues some Xbox Live members in Europe are experiencing. Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to fine tune the quality and reliability of Xbox One commands. Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements. Updates to Xbox One device management to address issues controlling TVs, set top boxes, and receivers that our customers have reported. New audio settings to tune how much volume is lowered when Kinect is used in communications. Again, this update will be coming in April, so stay tuned for more updates. SOURCE:NEOGAF
