  1. Hey everyone, I apologize for missing a week, last week wasn't exactly the best for me personally with a lot of family issues going on and I couldn't get on it, however we're here today so fear not! I've found three great articles that hopefully you all love! Before we start I just want to say that I will be advertising upcoming events in these WNWs, so PM me if you have an event coming up and you'd like me to put it in here. Next week we have a co-hosted event by myself and the wondrous Self Destruct on Halo Wars! Be sure to sign up ASAP, as spots fill quick! Now, let's get started! View attachment: WNW 91314.JPG GTA V Gets Confirmed Release Date on PS4, Xbox One, and PC Grand Theft Auto V, the hype couldn't escape us last year and it likely won't this year either, as GTA V is on the horizon. Polygon.com states that Rockstar has placed a confirmed release date for the current generation versions and the PC versions, though PC users might be disappointed. The game will launch on November 18th on Xbox One and PS4, and launch January 27th on PC. As well as having a flux of better graphics and smoother frame rate, the game will also include new weapons, cars, wildlife, and activities, as well as improvements to damage and weather. If you're one of the four people that cares, there are 100 new songs on the radio station and new mixes. Online will see improvements like an enhanced player count for up to 30 players and the ability to transfer characters across consoles (I.E. PS3 > Xbox One, Xbox 360 > PS4, etc). As well, transferring will unlock bonus content if you completed the prologue on PS3 or Xbox 360. And finally if you pre-order you get an in-game bonus of half a million GTA dollars for single player use and half a million GTA dollars for online. View attachment: 180798506-1024x682.jpg Are you purchasing GTA V for Xbox One, PS4, PC, or none of the above? Let me know below! Blue Xbox 360, 500GB Call of Duty Bundle, and Kinect Bundle Announced Microsoft is doing a great job showing that they still care about their previous generation console, the Xbox 360, with this new set of bundles. Xbox.com announced the three new bundles available in store October 7th, a Blue Xbox 360 exclusive to Walmart, a Call of Duty Bundle, and a bundle with Kinect. The first bundle is the Call of Duty Bundle releasing this fall, and it includes a 500GB black Xbox 360, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Ghosts, one month of Xbox Live Gold, and the typical controller. This bundle will launch for $249 USD and will be available in the usual stores. The next bundle is a Kinect Bundle, including, again, the black Xbox 360, now 4GB, a black Kinect, Kinect Adventures and Forza Horizon, and a month of Gold and the controller. This bundle is the same as the last in terms of pricing, $249, and will be available everywhere. The final bundle is exclusive to Walmart and includes a blue Xbox 360, for $249. View attachment: 20140305_Yellowstone_A8.png Which bundle will you pick up if any? Debate these three beautiful bundles in the thread! PayDay 2 and Hotline Miami Team Up in New DLC If you haven't heard of or played PayDay 2 by now, you're lying, as the game has been all over the gaming community, especially the PC community. GameInformer.com has some news you might like if you're a PayDay fan and a Hotline Miami fan on PC. The two game's developers have teamed up for a neon themed PayDay 2 add-on exclusive to PC. A short teaser (visible on the link page) shows off some possible additions, new masks, maps, modes, weapons, etc. As of now though, news is slim, but we have a confirmed release date of September 30th, 2014. And of course the game will likely be outfitted in Hotline Miami's signature style of flashy neon. View attachment: payday-2-hotline-miami-themed-dlc-coming-this-month.jpg Are you annoyed that the DLC is exclusive to PC? Discuss below! Thank you guys a ton for reading, this was a slow week so not a lot of 'big' gaming news, I promise there'll be more soon! I'll see you all next time, take care! *Insert ending music here* View full article

  9. I think that Halo 5 should be for the Xbox 360. Who agrees with me?
  10. I'm gonna throw this thread out there as a bit of a teaser as well as an invitation to anyone out there that still loves to play there daily Halo, but doesn't have many people left on their friend's list that plays Halo. I'm making a gaming community called "Project Ascension" with a strong emphasis on Halo. The community will deal work with our members to grow and expand for every type of gamer, from the casual Halo player, to the elite players. We are set up to have a war-simulation event (And no, not a LARP) in which all our participating members form into teams and work to gain domination of a risk type board, with each territory being represented by an actual in-game map. Alongside this, you can expect us to have a handful of gamenights each week ranging from any of the Halos, to other amazing multiplayer games. On top of the Campaign war simulations, and gamenights, we will also hold Tournaments, and days were we get together to simply work on achievements to help our members get that next step closer to 100% their games. Now that I'm done with the very rough explanation of what Project Ascension is, let me try provide some quick guidelines to the community: 1.) We don't have an age range, We have met plenty of 14 year olds that have it much more together than some guys and gals in college. We do however work to limit drama on the community to as small as we can. 2.) No, we do not require any changes to your gamertags, profiles, statuses, or anything like that. It's dumb, and a waste of your time to do it, and a waste of my time to even think of asking you to do it. 3.) We are an open community, if you are part of another community, we don't mind. We are just restarting and we understand that other larger communities have a lot to offer as well. We do appreciate monogamous members, but it's not like we are gonna chain you to the community. 4.) No, we don't demand that you attend every thing we do. We do appreciate members conveying that they wanna join an event, but unless you convey you want to join in, you don't need to feel pressure to join. Project Ascension already has pretty much everything we need to start up on a moment's notice, but due to our admins either being in college final's month, busy with a wedding around the corner, as well as other things in life demanding our attention, we won't be officially starting up for about a month and a half, late May to early June to help remove the chronological math from that. With all of that said, myself, and the other admins do find ourselves enough spare time to jump on our xbox often enough to forge some fun maps, do matchmaking, and keep up with anyone that wants to join with us for some fun times. If you feel like you wanna just jump on Halo and play with some decent guys feel free to send a friend request to gamertag: Salvanous.
  11. The Games With Gold program will start this June for the Xbox One announced by Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. Yes Games With Gold launches on the Xbox One in June, which is a lot sooner than what a lot of people expected, the launch is to mark the one year anniversary when it first launched on the Xbox 360. The two games that will be available to download for free are "Max: The Curse of Brotherhood" and "Halo: Spartan Assault." Phil Spencer made the announcement earlier today on Xbox Wire. "The program will launch on Xbox One with “Max: The Curse of Brotherhood” and “Halo: Spartan Assault.” A single Gold membership will get you access to the free games for both Xbox One and Xbox 360." Max: The Curse of Brotherhood that released just last December is a 2-D side scrolling game developed by Press Play which is a sequel to "Max & The Magic Marker". Halo: Spartan Assault originally came out for Microsoft Windows and Windows Phone last year and then released on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. There will also be three titles to download for free in June for Xbox 360 users, the additional title on top of the two gold subscribers originally get is also to celebrate the one year anniversary. The three free games are "Dark Souls,” “Charlie Murder” and “Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.” So by looks of this announcement Xbox 360 users will get a total of five games for free in June as they can also get the two free games that are coming to the Xbox One. What do you think of Games With Gold coming to the Xbox One? Are you looking forward to see the future of the program on the new console? Source: Xbox Wire
  12. Halo is coming to MineCraft: Xbox 360 Edition! Halo Waypoint's Twitter tweeted the above photo earlier today along with the caption: "Yes, this is happening. #XBLA" Little is know about this other than the screenshot above, but it appears to be a Halo themed Mash Pack- DLC for Minecraft that features music, various re-skinned blocks and items, and character skins. (Similar to the Mass Effect and Skyrim mash packs previously released.) From the screenshot above we can see that whatever the content is, it will likely feature UNSC Computer systems, sand bag barriers, a needler, and a Halo ring that spans the sky. If this is a Halo themed mashup pack, you can expect it to cost about $3.99 USD. Though little is known at the moment, you can expect to see more on this in the coming weeks, as we look towards what will likely be the first Halo mashup pack for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. What do you think of this news? Would you buy a Halo themed mashup pack? Be sure to leave us your thoughts in the comments section below. SOURCE: TWITTER/HALOWAYPOINT
  13. Electronic Arts has confirmed that there will not be a digital download of Titanfall for the Xbox 360, as it "simply did not represent the true Titanfall experience.” Titanfall recently launched after nearly a month's worth of delay on the Xbox 360 to critical success, like that of it's Xbox One and PC counterparts, both of which sold much better due to Digital Releases. However, EA's own website confirmed that the 360 version would not experience the same method of purchase. EA.com has stated it's reasoning for such actions, saying that it was considered, but after they felt that it "should have never been offered." They also stated that they, "hope players understand this decision was all about quality and making sure you get the best Titanfall experience." Considering some can only afford to buy it over Games on Demand, this could be a deal-breaker for potential customers, and is likely a shot in the foot on EA's part, though an understandable decision. View attachment: titanfallbattle.jpg This news is definitely some hard news to take in, especially if you are looking to get the Xbox 360 version and can't access a local game store, or simply prefer digital downloads. Has this impacted your decision on buying the game? Let me know below, thanks for reading! View full article
  14. The launch of TitanFall on the Xbox 360 will undergo a two-week delay. The launch of TitanFall for the Xbox 360 will be a two-week long delay, as revealed by a blog post on EA's official website, the game will now be released on April 8th (April 11, if you're in the UK.) The reason for this delay is simply because Bluepoint studios needs a little more time to "deliver an epic Titanfall experience for Xbox 360 players." This delay may bring a bit of disappointment to those anxious to play Respawn's new FPS, but you can be sure its in the best interest of the community. (I'm sure no one at EA or Bluepoint wants to have a repeat of Battlefield 4's release problems) So what do you think, how much can this delay benefit TitanFall's release on Xbox 360? Leave your thoughts on this in the comments below. SOURCE:EA.COM

  18. Thought that Halo 4 or Gears of war 3 had the best graphics? Well think again as they might be getting kicked of their throne as Crysis 3 may be taking the lead. More details below Source: Examiner In an interview with VideoGamer on Tuesday, Cevat Yerli talked a little bit about the graphics of the upcoming multiplatform title, “Crysis 3.” The CEO of Crytek boasts that no other Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 video game, not even “Halo” or “Gears of War,” look as good technically as the first-person shooter on consoles. "No game will ever look technically better than Crysis 3 on these consoles, flat out. Most games are not even anywhere near Crysis 2 technically. I'm not talking about art style – art is subjective – but the pure fact of what we have been cramming in with Crysis 2 on Xbox [360] and PlayStation [3], I've yet to see a game do that still today. Any day I will take a battle against Gears and Halo, whatever, the amount of data we put in and the detail level is far superior. With Crysis 3 we're pushing that to another level, but the PC is just two levels beyond." View slideshow: ‘Crysis 3’ graphics compared to ‘Halo’ and ‘Gears of War’ “Crysis 3” is currently being developed by Crytek Frankfurt, the same studio responsible for the previous games in the series in addition to the original “Far Cry.” Crytek UK (previously known as Free Radical Design, the studio behind “Haze” and “TimeSplitters”) worked on the multiplayer portion of the video game. “Crysis 3” is slated to come out for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms in North America on Feb. 19, 2013. You can pre-order the first-person shooter in the following link: “Crysis 3”
  19. I have an Xbox 360 and a Macbook Pro (spring '11 model). I was wondering what would be the best way to record my screen based on my situation so I can make Halo videos for my YouTube channel. I have checked my TV and it has no A/V Out port ( ). I would prefer to record in 720p HD or better. I have looked at a few capture cards but they only support Windows.
  20. Microsoft has announced a one-day sale for “Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition.” According to a report from the Major Nelson blog on Dec. 13, the company will be discounting several skin and texture packs by 50 percent for a limited amount of time. The sale coincide with the announcement of “Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition” selling 10 million copies since release. The mash-up packs, which were introduced in a recent title update for the open-world sandbox video game, won’t be a part of the deal. Skin Pack 1 Skin Pack 2 Skin Pack 3 Skin Pack 4 Skin Pack 5 Battle & Beasts Skin Pack Festive Skin Pack Plastic Texture Pack Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack Natural Texture Pack Fantasy Texture Pack “Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition” came out digitally through the Xbox Live Marketplace on May 9, 2012 and then to retailers on June 4, 2013. Although the console port does not allow user-created mods, 4J Studios developed the skin and texture packs as compensation. The trial versions of the downloadable contents can be played for free but will need to be purchased in order to unlock the full features. The aforementioned 4J Studios development team is also responsible for porting “Minecraft” to the PS3, PS4 and Xbox One home consoles as well as the Playstation Vita handheld system. The release dates for the forthcoming ports have not yet been announced. The “Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition” skin and texture packs one-day sale will begin on Dec. 14. Source-Examiner View full article
  21. Currently the Xbox 360 version of World Of Tanks is still in Beta, and still in works. The entire point of moving the PC version of World Of Tanks to, the Xbox 360 is so far a success. I myself luckily got my hands on a World Of Tanks Beta code in the first 24 hours it was released as a Beta. I played it for a while, and when you first play it can be very hard to know how to shoot your shots. During the beginning of the first beta, they gave away tons of gold. I would say 500,000, and that is allot. So that was easy money you could transfer from gold to silver. Silver is the main currency in buying tanks, upgrades, packages, consumables, and Etc.... But they gave away all that gold, that it wasn't much of a challenge. In about 1 week I used all that gold to get a T1 Heavy Tank, and it was kinda fast, but it was like a hulk. It was like a bullet reflector, and that made the game so easier! During The first Beta Of World Of Tanks I Give The Game A Rating Of. 3 Star After the first beta, I came back on the game, and I had to re download everything. Which took a while, because of all these updates but it was "COMPLETELY" worth it. All my tanks were gone, but it didn't matter to me. I saw that they added so many more features. You could customize your tank, you could use your gold for silver,XP,and premium. And premium is when you buy it with gold and you get doubled the income you get from each game you play. They also added that you can buy tanks with gold. So I decided to start out with a light tank. Light tanks are more like spotters for artillery, and they were bullet magnets BUT fast!!!! I decided that rather use mediums, but the first 2 mediums you get for the American side isn't really effective against anything. Once I got a M3-Lee, everything changed for my thoughts on the medium category M3's were basically a big threat for lights, tank destroyers, mediums, artillery, and sometimes heavy. I continued with my awesome rad M3, until I got an T1 Heavy. Once I got into a game, with the T1 Heavy, everything was balanced now. It was no longer a hulk, it was more like the damage and speed went down allot. Which made this game, to be continually more fun!! During The 2nd Beta Of World Of Tanks I Give The Game A Rating Of. 5 star ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ This Game was developed by Wargaming.net This game was produced by Microsoft _________________________________________________________________________ Do you want more Information about World Of Tanks? The Game is made up of 5 different classes of tanks. Light Tanks- Light tanks are mainly beginning tanks, and are mainly spotters for artillery, to peg the other team. Medium Tanks- Some Mediums Tanks can be tough, while some others can be very weak. Mediums are mainly used in the main battle, fighting in the fronts. Heavy Tanks- Heavy's are your main battle tanks, each match needs a heavy or you are practically dead. The heavy's are mainly big bullet proof tanks, that can withstand basically anything. They are the main battle pushers within the game. Tank Destroyers- Tank Destroyers sound like a Class A battleship, but they actually are not. They have a incredibly strong attack level, but there health and armor is horrible. Destroyers mainly hide in the back where they can see everybody. Artillery- Artillery can be a big or small , and they are really effective against every tank in the game. They usually stay int he far back, out of the battle field, and once somebody spots a enemy, Artillery wipes them clean. Game Modes (Currently) Standard The goal is to capture the enemy flag/base or eliminate all enemy tanks within 15 minutes. If time expires it is a draw. Encounter Two teams fight to capture a single neutral base or eliminate all enemy tanks within 15 minutes. If time expires it is a draw. Information-Wki,google images
  22. It was announced today by Bungie that they had set the release date for Destiny for September 9th 2014. Below is an excerpt from the Bungie Weekly Update for 12/6/2013 and a news article from the site. Relevance of the Date The date falls almost 9 months to the day from this day.It is the 9th day of the 9th month of the year. This is a Tuesday in the second week of the month. There will be a full moon on that date. There appears to be no relevance with the date other than that unless there is some 'in house' reasoning for selecting it. It falls well before the shopping period for the Holidays and after the summer break for schools. Update excerpt This week, we set that date in stone: September 9th, 2014. In an interview with the community back in 2001, Jason Jones once lamented the inexorable tick of the clock. More recently, he reminded our studio just how valuable the coming months will be, and challenged the team to make every second of Destiny development count. It’s an exciting time to be at Bungie. The stage is set, and we’re going to make these moments matter. We believe Destiny will be worth the wait, and we’re anxious for the chance to prove it to you. News Article Since then, Destiny has continued to reveal its promise. Every new build brings us closer to our original vision. With those goals in sight, we intend to use every moment from now until the release of the game to ensure that Destiny lives up to your expectations, and our own. Today, in partnership with Activision, we are proud to announce that the worldwide launch of Destiny will happen on September 9th. Accordingly, the Destiny Beta will kick off in the summer of 2014, available first on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The early support and enthusiasm for Destiny has been inspiring and humbling. We believe this is the right decision for our game, our studio, and our passionate community. Thank you for coming along with us on this adventure. See you starside. EA revealed the first Medal of Honor: Warfighter DLC earlier this month. The map pack is a tie-in with Sony Pictures Entertainment's Zero Dark Thirty, a Hollywood movie based on the real-life special forces mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden.
  25. At a time when Microsoft (MS) is planning to unveil it's next generation XBOX it may be just the time to reflect on the past. Some companies will, seemingly, will unabashedly promote their newest products well beyond any realistic measure in order to get the biggest sales return possible. A story I recently read by Andrew Groen of Wired took a look back at all the hype offered by Microsoft surrounding the XBOX 360 and he provided an interesting retrospective of sales versus reality. These insights may better help the gamer to weed through the onslaught of hype, as experienced most recently with Halo 4, and the reality, as seen by the current population that still plays the game. The reality there is an unfinished game was sold to the consumer to hit a sales period for the holidays instead of taking the time to finish the product, which without a doubt, would have given the playing population a fully functional game that met the standards spoken to by it's producer and maintained a much stronger presence in the gaming world. The jubilation they thrived in briefly about sales was soon darkened by the reality of the disenfranchised fan base. This decision also affected a supporting company, Certain Affinty, whose reputation, and most likely income, depended on DLC content and their work on forge for Halo 4. Hopefully these companies will see this reality for themselves in a manner that will allow them to continue to produce quality products and experiences for their consumers without loosing sight of the consumers need to be able to trust in the very products and services they provide. The story as offered at wired.com 7 Years Later, Has Microsoft Kept Its Xbox 360 Promises? BY ANDREW GROEN - 04.25.13 - 6:30 AM Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer wasn’t shy about predicting that Xbox 360 would change the world of entertainment as we know it, but has the company delivered on its huge promises? Photo: Jonathan Snyder/Wired.com Microsoft was more than a little bombastic when it began hyping up the Xbox 360 before its 2005 launch. “In the next generation, Xbox 360 will transform the way people play games and have fun,” said Robbie Bach, former president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division, at the company’s 2005 press briefing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Certainly it did, but not necessarily in the ways that Microsoft promised. Xbox 360 was a great gaming device, one that Microsoft continually improved upon in a way that was unheard of in the game business until this generation. It constantly added significant new features, upgraded the user experience and moved from an also-ran to a major player, forcing the competition to follow suit. The PlayStation 2 you bought in 2001 was the same exact machine in 2005, but the Xbox 360 you bought that year would be unrecognizable now. Xbox 360 did change everything. But many of the things Microsoft talked about at the beginning of the generation turned out to be so much vaporware. And often instead of pursuing them, Microsoft allowed the competition to. It’s pretty clear Microsoft was shining us on about… well, a lot. On Wednesday, Microsoft officially announced what all of us have known was coming for years now: It will unveil the next generation of Xbox hardware at an event in Redmond, Washington on May 21. This follows the sort-of unveiling of PlayStation 4 by Sony in February, at which it made grandiose pledges such as saying that PlayStation 4 will “make you feel emotions that you have never felt in real life.” Sure it will. As we pointed out at the time, Sony made many similar promises about PlayStation 3, many of which failed to materialize. What about Microsoft’s hype about Xbox 360, back in 2005? Here’s what executives said, and what really happened. “A product with games at its core, surrounded by limitless connected digital entertainment.”— J Allard, then Xbox chief experience officer, at the 2005 E3 press briefing. “Limitless” was obvious hyperbole, and yet it ended up being truer than even former Microsoft evangelist Allard probably believed at the time. At the time, “connected digital entertainment” meant people would use their vast knowledge of 2005 technology to plug in an iPod to hear songs through the TV. Today, 360 users can access the internet, Twitter, Facebook, ESPN apps, live presidential election coverage and thousands of movies, TV shows and songs. Verdict: True ^ “For us to say we’re going to go through a whole generation without an HD capacity drive — I think that would be naive to assume that we’ll be sitting here at the end of the Xbox 360 generation and no such device will have shipped… We’re not going to be sitting here in five years saying, ‘Oh jeez, we don’t have HD DVD-type storage.’” – Steve Ballmer, Engadget interview, published May 2005. We suppose that Ballmer was technically correct: After launching Xbox 360 with a standard-capacity DVD drive instead of a high-density disc, Microsoft did release an HD-DVD drive that plugged into an Xbox 360 via USB. This was only for watching HD-DVD movies, not playing games, and Microsoft hastily discontinued it when HD-DVD lost the format battle to Blu-ray — a battle that may have been won solely because Sony put Blu-ray into every PlayStation 3. Had every Xbox 360 played HD-DVD discs, Blu-ray might have gone the way of Betamax. Seven years later, Microsoft is sitting here saying, “Oh jeez, we don’t have HD-DVD type storage.” Just call him Naive Steve. Verdict: False ^ “On the [Xbox Live] Marketplace… she might never pick up a controller, never take a run in the halfpipe but she’ll be able to design and sell stickers, shirts, boards, soundtracks and even design her own skate park for those hardcore gamers.” — J Allard, 2005 Microsoft E3 Press Briefing. The “she” in this particular statement was the infamous “Velocity Girl,” the online screen name of a hypothetical young female non-gamer who would use her Xbox 360 as a place to create and sell her own designs and products. Microsoft promised an online modding community where users could sell their digital wares for cash on the Xbox 360 marketplace, but the company never really even tried. Throughout the system’s lifespan Microsoft never implemented any large-scale programs that would have brought about the non-gaming hipster-design revolution that it prophesized. We’ve seen a couple small attempts over the years, though. The Forza Motorsport storefront, for instance, allows players to create car designs and other goods to sell for in-game credits — but not real cash. Players creating items and selling them at a profit has actually has become a reality — but it’s Valve doing it on the Steam service, not Microsoft. Verdict: False ^ “It’s a future where my games are always personalized to match my desires.” — “Kim,” the ultra-hip introduction presenter at Microsoft’s E3 2005 press briefing. In the early days of its marketing campaign, Microsoft used cringe-inducing statements like this to brag about how much Generation Me was going to be able to “express themselves” through their Xbox 360. While Microsoft has done some great work in making the console itself more flexible to the user’s interests (you can even still buy those staggeringly pointless faceplates that Microsoft abandoned years ago), the games themselves have rarely fit that description. Downloadable content has provided an avenue for players to somewhat personalize some games, but giving a company more money for new digital character outfits hardly counts as “personalization.” Verdict: False ^ Microsoft executive Robbie Bach had to walk a careful verbal tightrope when he talked about Xbox’s backward compatibility. Photo courtesy Microsoft “We will make money, and a lot of money in this next generation!” — Steve Ballmer, interview with Engadget published May 18, 2005. Microsoft spent four tough years with the original Xbox in which it operated the division at a big loss — reportedly $4 billion over four years — in order to try to gain a foothold in the videogame market. So investors wouldn’t have been pleased if Microsoft said they’d have to wait another generation for the profit to begin flowing. Though Xbox 360 also operated at a loss for its first few years, Microsoft’s fortunes finally turned in late 2008 when it posted the first net profits for the Entertainment and Devices division (which includes Xbox, Windows Phone, PC gaming and Zune) since its entry into consoles. It got off to a rough start, though. Xbox 360 faced a $1 billion setback when Microsoft extended the system’s warranty to three years due to the dreaded Red Ring of Death error, resulting in a disastrous $1.9 billion operating loss for the division in 2007. It will take more time for Microsoft to erase the massive multi-billion dollar loss accrued in the early years, but the division is now profitable and Microsoft is now a major market player. Verdict: Somewhat true ^ “Tonight we are pleased to announce that Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top-selling Xbox games.” — Robbie Bach, E3 2005 Microsoft Press Briefing. This is Microsoft’s most infamous statement prior to the launch of the Xbox 360. When Bach made this announcement, the crowd went wild before he finished his sentence, allowing him to mumble the “top selling” bit. It seemed, at first, that he had just said the Xbox 360 was backward compatible with original Xbox games, and anybody who purchased a 360 would be able to catch up on the first Xbox’s library of games. We soon found out that you really have to parse every single word of Microsoft’s statements. It indeed only intended to make the top-selling Xbox games backward compatible with Xbox 360, not the entire library. And it didn’t even do that, not at first: Less than a third of the Xbox’s library worked on Xbox 360 at launch, and the emulation software that ran the games was often glitchy, sometimes to the point where the game played much worse than it did on the less powerful machine. Many of the “top-selling” games were actually missing, since they were harder to emulate than the cheapo games: Splinter Cell didn’t work, but Barbie Horse Adventure was good to go. Over the next two years, Microsoft did work to add more games, eventually getting about half of the library emulated and adding most (but not all) of the biggest games on the platform. Verdict: A sneaky half-truth ^ “Microsoft will inevitably succeed in Japan.” – Takashi Sensui, general manager of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business division in Japan. The worldwide videogame business was a much different industry in 2005. Though Japan’s influence has recently begun to slip, in 2005 it was seen as a major key to success, and the original Xbox tanked miserably there. With Xbox 360, Microsoft devoted considerable resources to changing that, but not even two exclusive RPGs from one of the most famous designers in Japan (Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi) could overcome the widespread apathy toward Xbox 360. In June of 2011, Microsoft announced it had sold 1.5 million Xbox 360s in nearly six years. To contrast, the Nintendo DS has sold over 33 million consoles there to date. Hardly a good showing. Verdict: False ^ “We’ll get there by making games more approachable for people who didn’t grow up with a game controller.” — Robbie Bach, 2005 E3 press briefing, on expanding the market. Microsoft didn’t manage to do this when it launched Xbox 360, but Nintendo did the next year with the Wii’s motion controller. It was later revealed that Microsoft had turned down the rights to the underlying core technology of Wii. After Nintendo’s success, it was much more receptive to the idea for Kinect, a different type of motion controller. Kinect has brought about some of the most wretched games in the history of the console. But it did have a couple of highly successful, demographic-expanding, controller-free games like Dance Central. On the other other hand, Kinect has mostly been successful at selling to small kids who can’t yet handle a controller, not grownups who never learned to use one. Verdict: Half true ^ “Wouldn’t it be cool to have the game that has the person on the PC being the general who is driving the strategy, and the person on the console on Xbox Live executing the strategy? That is a completely new genre… and it leverages everything that Steve [ballmer] talked about that we’re putting in place.” — Robbie Bach, interview with Engadget, published May 18, 2005. Seven years later, no game even remotely approaching this type of PC-console cross-play has been released. There have been some instances of console and PC players being able to play the same game together, but unfortunately for Microsoft they were mostly on PlayStation 3. The only game that seems somewhat similar to this dream is Dust 514, a multiplayer shooter which is bound to the outer space MMO EVE Online. In Dust 514, players can coordinate with groups in EVE for funding and even artillery bombardments which can help them win battles. But this, too, is a Sony exclusive. So yes, it would absolutely be cool, but Microsoft hasn’t bothered to do it. Verdict: False ^
