Heh. the whole "keep xbox horizontal" thing works the opposite for me. I have the fat model (jasper), and used to keep it horizontal. I just got Xbox live and played halo 3 very often (a few months before reach came out). A few months after reach came out (disc was intsalled from day 1) my xbox strted acting up, with the disc becoming unbalanced. I then set it up horizontal, and since then i've had no problems whatsoever (aside from the occasional dusty vent grille) and i keep it clean regularly.
Most of the guide is common sense (duh), but the vinegar thing was interesting. Good job on the guide though!
My Portfolio

-Confined -A map inpired by Halo 3's Isolation. *2-6 players
Gated --Another semi-asthetic semi-competitive map. Sort of like a mini Avalanche. *2-8 players
Sandbar
-Battle around a battered island sandbar for evelasting victory *12-16 players
// // // // // //-LINKS BELOW DO NOT WORK- WORKS IN PROGRESS-\\ \\ \\ \\ \\ \\
-CSS Cleansing wind
- A covenant- themed semi-asthetic map. Inspired by the Halo CE level "Truth and Reconcilliation". *2-8 players

-Greco
-Just started today (1/2/2012). Sort of like a mini Sword Base between Alaska & Montana *2-8 players (TBD)

Putting it on a DAMP towel is a last resort option though, because if you do that with a dirty X-Box the dust can turn to mud, and then can cause your ventilation to stop working all together, causing a RRoD.

Yeah, this video features the "Overheat" trick, which repairs the soldering in the 360. That doesn't PREVENT the RRoD, and it doesn't always fix it either. As a matter of fact, that can actually CAUSE the RRoD. I should also point out that the towels in those videos are dry.

In the newer consoles it's actually the "Red Dot of Death" or RDoD. They can be avoided in pretty much the same ways. And thank you :D

The funny thing, was, after I wrote the letter (I was complaining about 1 specific store), that store shut down a few weeks later :D My friends hated me after that lol!

Does setting the Xbox on a shoebox work? Cuz that's my current situation.

It's cardboard, which in and of itself has decent airflow through it. You should be fine :) Although, try to find a wood surface sooner rather than later. The dust from the cardboard could clog your vents.

I'll try wood, but it has one of those polishy finishes on it. And its a quite sturdy, large box. So I should be fine for a while.

A decent finish is a good thing to put your xbox on. It will help with the dust, but a downside is it heats up a little quicker. No worries though, just don't leave your xbox on for a super long time :D
