Destiny Makes Million!

Yesterday, one day after it's release, Destiny became a record breaker by raking in a whopping $632 million! Activision, the game's publisher, announced that they had exceeded 500 million US Dollars and that this "marks another blockbuster success" for their company. They were confident from the start that all the hard work they had put into Destiny would pay off.

The game currently sells at $60, and special editions with higher prices are also available for purchase. Although Destiny pulled through with high numbers, there are some in the industry that still credit Halo for being the game to build on the Xbox's success.

So what do you think? Will you be buying Destiny any time soon? If you already have, do you think it's as good as it was said to be?

I'm always happy for Bungie. They have shaped millions of childhoods, and brought great memories to our lives, and I'm glad they continue to do so.

Just wish it wasn't next to the activision name.

Activision says they are making boatloads of money but declines to reveal how many copies have been sold...

After spending the most money developing a game in the history of gaming and potentially getting egg on their face...

And after admitting that most of the 500 million dollars is going towards "advertising campaigns" (for those who are naive, that means paying the media to say good things about your game)...

Destiny would have had to sell between 15 and 16 million copies for Activision to break even on their half a billion dollar investment. The news that's been coming out seems really shady to me, primarily because the numbers don't seem to add up.

Also, you have to consider that Activision makes a percentage of the profit, not the entirety of the profit. Most publishers make anywhere between 20% and 50% from the PROFITS of the sales. Which means for Activision to have made 632 million United States Dollars from sales so far...

632m/60 USD per unit = 10,533,333 and 1/3 units

ASSUMING that Activision makes 50% (which is very unlikely), that means

632,000,000/30 USD per unit = 21,066,666 and 2/3 units

Assuming the more likely scenario that Activision makes 20%, that means

632,000,000/12 USD per unit = 52,666,666 and 2/3 units

In pre-orders and shelve populating. I think that Activision has no qualms about blowing smoke to the media to try to boost Destiny's popularity (and hopefully make their money back).

EDIT: Also, for evidence of Activision buying good press, look no further than MetaCritic.

Rrhuntington just be glad its not Ea....  :D

Buy a Destiny exotic helmet for 10 dollars and 99 cents! Become the envy of all your friends even at level 1.

Wait... hang on, did you seriously just claim Activision isn't as bad as EA?

Have you even SEEN all the nonsense DLC they put into their games these days?

The only difference between EA and Activision is that EA is worse. Give it six months and I pretty much guarantee this kind of stuff is going to happen to Destiny.

I think the money they made is well deserved. They can take all my money honestly, because once you reach level 20 there isn't much left but free roaming, crucible, the vanguard strikes, and.... Well, lots of other amazing things to do. The community of gamers I've met so far are nice people, and it's all oriented around team work. I love it.

Oh yes I did! :D

Director,  Destiny did not cost anywhere near 500 million. It most likely cost around 150, 175 million to make including advertising.

Most of It went to the Destiny franchise as a whole for dlc, Destiny 2 and 3 and whatever else.

You know, I would believe you, except that everything I see tells me you don't know what you're talking about.

The DEVELOPMENT of the game didn't cost anywhere near 500 million, but Activision clearly stated that they had invested half a billion dollars into Destiny.

The CEO of Activision stated that they had spent around 500 million on Development, marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties, and other costs. A spokesperson from Activision then verified this with the news source that ran the interview. Just for emphasis: The CEO said they spent 500 million dollars on Destiny and THE COMPANY confirmed they spent 500 million on Destiny.

The CEO of Bungie stated that you would have to ask Activision about everything except for development, but development didn't cost 500 million dollars. The figure he gave was specifically for development and he clearly stated he had no idea what it cost for marketing or anything else.

Here's the very first sentence out of Bungie's CEO's mouth during the interview: "For marketing you’d have to ask Activision people, but for development costs, not anything close to $500 million."

Looks like a ton of people bought into the hype. I, myself am not overly impressed with the game. Is it a good game? Yes. Is it ground breaking and like nothing I have ever seen before? No.

Over all I find it feels a lot like Reach....with typical Bungie level layouts. Fight from A to B then defend B then fight back to A. Very repetitive.
