Why you should not yet invest in the next generation of consoles

Don't move this thread unless there is a 'next generation consoles' forum.

WiiU will not be talked about here, as it isn't truly what is referred to as 'next generation'.

I'll just start by saying that the generic comment of both parties, Microsoft and Sony have wasted more potential than I can readily believe. First, marketing model. Already it is littered with microtransactions and overpriced games, especially when you consider value scaled to content, it is a bit off in that department.

Titanfall runs in 792p.

What.

The 'next generation' was set at a level to have games be liked films today, films on Sony's Blu-Ray disks usually run at 1080i, which is a massive step up from 1080p, yet alone 792p, only a bit above the lowest quality in the spectrum of 'high definition' (720p).

We can see here that developers are limiting the potential more than the actual consoles.

Who in the world would develop Titanfall and believe it is something to be proud of? Unfinished game, no single player campaign, which is bearable, 6v6 multiplayer only, you aren't even allowed private lobbies. The only thing that Titanfall does well is balanced gameplay. This lack of content paired with price is an insane step back for the progression of gaming, it is a sprint away from what is regarded as 'Perfect Capitalism', where the consumer would know exactly how much the game is worth before buying (they don't. They purchase Titanfall only to soon realise it is a 6v6 online game without much more to it). Now the b1tchfest about Titanfall is over, we can discuss wasted potential.

Meet Steam.

The much-adored free service that, yes, is for PC only of course, but has three qualities that make it work so well.

  1. It offers a much bigger service than Xbox Live and PlayStation Network Plus, yet it is absolutely free!
  2. Complete support for indie and any low-budget developer, even massive support for those with an average-sized budget or a huge budget. Steam Greenlight is a magnet for people to develop Steam games.
  3. Respectable pricing. I saw Call of Duty: Ghosts for £26.99 on the Steam store a month back, it was on offer. Compare that to the pricing set by Xbox One or PlayStation 4. £40-50/$60-70. Older games, such as Black Ops One, are not still £40, which is, or has been until recently, still the case on Xbox Live store.

How is this relevant?

Indie titles such as Rust and Starbound have clammered high, making a huge capital despite having such a small team as well as such a small initial budget for staff, technology and marketing. Their prices range at around £10-20, or approximately $15-25. If both Microsoft and Sony supported indie developers, the market for games such as Rust or Starbound would extend quite well for all parties. Pricing Rust for £15-20 for consoles would be sensible, as the developers of both games would receive the funding necessary to rewrite the game for consoles.

Indie titles are good. Cheap indie games that have quality and online support would work well for consoles. Why? Because indie titles reach corners that now big developer has bothered to venture, look at Papers, Please. Another indie game, a dystopian-themed game that would turn off every investor until you actually play it. It is a game regarded as "strangely addictive", it was a risk. A similar risk that neither Microsoft or Sony are willing to take.

Some question to answer:

  1. Do you prefer the Steam marketing model to that of Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's Playstation Network Plus?
  2. Would you be interested in small indie games, such as Rust, Starbound, Papers[,] Please, and any other ones not listed?
  3. Would you embrace the idea of rewriting, re-texturing, re-modelling and adding a bit more to existing PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games (examples would be Metro: Last Light, Mass Effect Trilogy).
  4. Do you regret investing in Next Generation consoles, or are you glad that you didn't invest in them (or did invest in them)?
  5. Do you have high-end hardware yourself, such as high-end PC-Monitor / TV / speakers? Do you think they make your gaming experience better on the new consoles and the old ones (as well as PC)?

1. Yes, it offers games cheaper and actually understands the correlation between the older the title the lower the game's price, and also because obviously it is free.
2. Yes, i have Rust and it is a great game, so, i would definitely be interested in more :)
3. Yes
4. Im glad i didn't, because not only that, there are so few games on it that it isn't worth buying, give it a year or 2, when there are more games :)
5. I think headphones and a high end monitor on the PC increases the experience and brings you more into the game, as it is all around you and is easier to relate to.

Steam

Would you be interested in small indie games, such as Rust, Starbound, Papers[,] Please, and any other ones not listed?

Nope, not an indie gamer

Would you embrace the idea of rewriting, re-texturing, re-modelling and adding a bit more to existing PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games (examples would be Metro:

Last Light, Mass Effect Trilogy).

From my experience as someone who mods a lot, al lot of modded content doesn't keep up with professional writers.

Do you regret investing in Next Generation consoles, or are you glad that you didn't invest in them (or did invest in them)?

I would never, depends if you are well informed or not. I am planning to buy a xbox one. Not because I want the best graphics or anything, but just because I prefer console gaming to PC gaming and Halo is not on pc which also counts for me.

Do you have high-end hardware yourself, such as high-end PC-Monitor / TV / speakers? Do you think they make your gaming experience better on the new consoles and the old ones (as well as PC)?

I got a 42'' samsung led tv, a gaming pc, a xbox 360 and ps3, a wii, every single nintendo, besides the wiiu.

Describing it as a lack of content is strange,

Battlefield 2 did not have single player campaign.

Quake aren had no single player campaign.

counter strike had no single player campagin.

Titanfall is known as a Multi player only shooter.

The added campaigns is a waste of consumer money. BF 3 and 4 had useless campaigns, unreal tournament 3 had a useless campaign.

games that try to focus on campaign and multiplayer, usually and up with one being inferior to the other.

While Titanfall is not perfect and if its any good can be a personal chose, it does however try to feature a combination of both, I call that a step forward in MP shooters.

The prices are set by the game companies, not the platforms, considering steam is a digital only store and thousands of people buy into these deals without any of the developers losing money because of it and this certainly not because of the people buying these games for console.

I'll just start by saying that the generic comment of both parties, Microsoft and Sony have wasted more potential than I can readily believe. First, marketing model. Already it is littered with microtransactions and overpriced games, especially when you consider value scaled to content, it is a bit off in that department.

Steam does this as well, just like the cod deal for ghosts. Microtransactions are mostly used on massive multiplayer online role playing games. There a few games which use microtransactions on console, most recent being world of tanks for xbox 360 and a while back hand of khul. GTA V uses this system as well, but offers you a way to earn the money on different missions and varied activities.

I dislike the indie industry, not because all there games are "bad" some I enjoyed very much, but people like phil fish, who is completely content with ******** of his fans, by cancelling FEZ 2, just because he had an argument on twitter, he deemed himself the all important game developer, while just making one good game.

The 720p to 1080P, sony used blu-ray for its ps3 system, the only games reaching the famed 1080p were software enhanced.

All of the next gen systems (including the Wiiu) haven't even reached their potential yet. remember that the xbox 360 first gen release, had no HDMI or 1080p support.

I have http://uk.creative.com/p/speakers/inspire-t6300 and another Creative headset for PC only, all of the Uni Serial Bus ports on my 360 kind of fell apart alongside with half of the console (console still works though!), so I can't use headset for consoles. The Speakers are on the extreme-high end, the price doesn't suggest it but it is bloody perfect.

PC monitor since I don't watch TV much, sadly I couldn't find any with channels for 5.1 or 7.1, which sucked so I had to spend ages trying to find 3.5mm splitters. It isn't necessarily 'high end', but I have no game that is limited by it (wouldn't mind a bigger PC-monitor, though, or resolution past 1920xWhatever).

I mean re-written literally.

Changing the store or plot of a game makes it a different game. To make Last Light or Mass 1/2/3 for Xbox One or PS4, you need to rewrite some scripts and make a lot of graphical edits for newer shaders.

It isn't as simple as played a DirectX7 game with DirectX9, it is like DX7 for a machine supporting DX11, it just wouldn't work unless changes were made.

No preference.

No, the only games I really play at the moment are FPS, and only a handful of them. I'd be fine with updated graphics.
Do you regret investing in Next Generation consoles, or are you glad that you didn't invest in them (or did invest in them)?
I've yet to invest, but if I might say so, i'm very eager to invest in the Xbox One.

I view everything possible in HD. Gotta have it come Kickoff time ;)
Yes I do think they enhance the overall experience.

I've never really gotten into PC gaming, I've nothing against it though and actually hope to build a gaming PC before too long. But when it comes to choosing a console or a PC, I think that the major tipping point rests upon exclusives, which is exactly why I'm getting an Xbox One. #Halo

Counter Strike wasn't priced as high as Titanfall, it was old and was generally a re-work on the Source engine used in Half Life 2, it is almost like a DLC for Half Life 2.

If you pay £50 for Titanfall to realise that there is no campaign, you'd be very disappointed. The amount of content and quality of content resulting in Titanfall's value does not equate to its pricetag.

If you pay £15 for Rust to realise that there is no campaign, you wouldn't mind.

I see, However I like some HD versions of games (Halo CEA, Fable Anniversary)  were cool. would be cool what you said, loved to see a highly adjusted version of some old games.

Other games still have a high price tag, even though they do not have a campaign.

It generally depends on the game. Rust is a survival simulator, when there is no campaign I generally understand it.

But other full fledged MP titles, stil have a price tag of 50 or 60.

Well when ever a new console comes out there is always going to be a lack of games for it ....

Also the only point you seems to make about these consoles not being "Next gen" Titanfall is 790p I think... but yet games like infamous second son is 1080p and a very stable 30fps with some of the most amazing effects I have ever seen in a game with more than 30 enemy's on screen at once...

Is that not next gen ?!

But I am not quite sure the PS4 and XB1 are a "Next gen" as I would like anyway rant over QUIZ TIME !!!!!!!!!! :D

1.Do you prefer the Steam marketing model to that of Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's Playstation Network Plus?
I prefer Steam especially because with MS games are overpriced less with Sonys but they are still to much

2.Would you be interested in small indie games, such as Rust, Starbound, Papers[,]
Yes I welcome any Indie games the PS4 has a bunch but could do with more..

3.Would you embrace the idea of rewriting, re-texturing, re-modelling and adding a bit more to existing PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation Why not it would more likely make the game better

4.Do you regret investing in Next Generation consoles, or are you glad that you didn't invest in them
I like my PS4 a lot the only real problem I have with it is that I feel it is not next gen enough but after playing Infamous second son I have a little more hope for it

5.Do you have high-end hardware yourself, such as high-end PC-Monitor / TV / speakers? Do you think they make your gaming experience better on the new consoles and the old ones

I have a gaming chair , headphones and yes I do feel they make the experience better overall.

As soon as I saw your Titanfall rant I can't take this post seriously. You were making a good post but that's just a big thumbs down. It is also ironic because the amount of online only PC games far out numbers online only console games. The only issue I have with Titanfall is its $60 price tag.

While I love PC Gaming more then my 360 show respect towards other games and at least play the game and be knowledgeable on it before you go around saying "unfinished game" which just shows ignorance on your part.

I won't be touching a next-gen console till  Destiny or next Halo game.  If people want a next gen console that's fine let them. If they want a PC that's fine let them.

  1. Do you prefer the Steam marketing model to that of Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's Playstation Network Plus?

Steam but MS and PSN are at least offering free games/deals now which is a step in the right direction but they will never truly be superior to Steam. Also what about GoG or Desura? You claim to support PC gaming but don't mention two other great purchasing platforms(just awful UI). They deserve attention too!

     2.  Would you be interested in small indie games, such as Rust, Starbound, Papers[,] Please, and any other ones not listed?

I love indie games.  I am a game developer myself so of course I support my people.

  3.  Would you embrace the idea of rewriting, re-texturing, re-modelling and adding a bit more to existing PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games

Of course. Mods are great I usually rebuy some triple AAA on my PC just for the mods.  All we need is the rest of the current Halo games to be ported over.

 4. Do you regret investing in Next Generation consoles, or are you glad that you didn't invest in them (or did invest in them)?

My little brother has one and at the moment I am still enjoying my 360/PC games so until Destiny or the next Halo come out I can wait.

 5. Do you have high-end hardware yourself, such as high-end PC-Monitor / TV / speakers? Do you think they make your gaming experience better on the new consoles and the old ones (as well as PC)?

I don't have anything super high end but in my opinion it depends on the game and the immersion level. I can play Halo 2 on my old television and still have a great time if I was playing BF4 with my HDTV. Just depends on the game I guess. Although a headset does help a lot but visuals don't matter to me.

I love my PC. It plays games a 1920 by 1080, I get frames 120+, and games are abundant and cheap. But I will not buy next gen consoles for the Power or the controller or what resolution it is able to do. I get them because of the exclusive games. :3

I love my Xbox One. It's a great console and severely underrated. Sure, most games right now aren't 1080p. but you really can't tell the difference anyway. Somebody from Xbox said from here on out most games will be 1080p. And what is the most important part about a console? The games. the Xbox One has a very impressive lineup of exclusive games this year. Halo 5/2A, Fable LEgends, SUnset Overdrive, Quantum Break, D4, and many more. The Ps4 also has some really good games coming out later this year. And as far as online services go, nothing will ever beat XBL.

Clutch PSN is catching up slowly and one day may be equals...

But no there is a difference between 1080 and 720 trust me...

1080 looks smoother and cleaner and more detail. :)

EDIT

And the reason for Xb1 games not being 1080 is because of the Kinect if you took out the Kinect the XB1 would have 8 percent more power.

Incorrect. That, I guarantee, is not the reason why the current games on Xbox One run at 720. You will see more and more games being released in 1080p on the Xbox One coming soon. The Kinect has nothing, and I repeat, nothing to do with how the Xbox One games are being displayed.
