Recently it was reported that Sony will not be making the PS4 compatible with used games and speculation began if the same thing will happen to the next gen Xbox and it seems that it going that way too and not only that, users will be required to have a constant internet connection to operate the console. So as well as not being able to play used next gen games does this also mean the next gen Xbox won't be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games and will we not be able to play our beloved games like Halo 3, Reach, Halo 4 and many others on the new xbox? Well there is a possibility that the feature that prevents used games to be played will only be aimed at next gen games, or it could be like the 360 only selected games will be playable on the new console or the whole backward compatibility could be wiped out completely.

With the expected announcement of Sony's next-generation console, the PS4, coming later this month, today we have acquired a few new details regarding Sony's direct competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 720. Through the information that was delivered in an article posted by

Edge Online today, it seems that Microsoft's Xbox 720 will require users to have a constant Internet connection to operate the device.

Along with the always online function, the Xbox 720 will completely eliminate the used game market. It is stated that Microsoft will still make physical copies of software available with the use of 50 GB capacity Blu-ray discs. These discs will be supplied with a one-time activation code and will be useless after this code has been used.

Since Microsoft is targeting the online delivery model, it is stated that the Xbox 720 will have a sizable hard drive shipped with the system. Continuing to drive for the use of motion control, the Xbox 720 will be shipped with a new Kinect device bundled with the system. It is stated that this device will be much more responsive than the original Kinect.

The more I hear about the next generation of consoles, the more I'm convinced I'm just going to switch over to PC altogether.

You know why I normally buy used games instead of new ones? Because it's £40 for a game off the shelf. That's a HUGE amount of money for someone on a student income, especially because we now live in an age where I'm expected to not only pay that up front, but to keep spending money via microtransactions or DLC. Sometimes even day-one DLC. So I'm not even getting everything I'm paying for.

Sometimes I do still buy big games on release day: Halo 4 and Mass Effect 3 immediately come to mind. Now, to make sure I had enough money to both buy those and not starve to death, I had to trade in some of my old games for store credit. If I couldn't trade those games in or sell them on via Amazon or eBay or whatever, then instead of buying five or six games 'off the shelf' every year, I'd only be able to afford one or two. That's LESS MONEY being spent on new releases!

Even then, the idea of not being able to play used games isn't the end of the world: if publishers cut the prices of their games accordingly, so that a new game was £25 or £30 on release day, it wouldn't be a problem. But what will actually happen is that prices will go up: expect to see the $80 standard edition for the next Xbox's release titles.

Plus, what if I buy a game and hate it? There's someone else out there who might like it, but can't afford it. That's someone else who could be paying for DLC, but who isn't, because they can't afford the game to begin with.

Or what if I'm surprised how much I like something? I bought the first Mass Effect not because I wanted to play it, but because I was bored and wanted something new and I saw a used copy for £10. I loved it so much that literally as soon as I finished it, I went out and bought the second, and ended up getting all the DLC for it as well, and even pre-ordered the third. Mass Effect wasn't something that, back then, I would have bought off the shelf, and definitely not for £40. And yet now I've probably spent over £100 altogether on the series, money that would have gone somewhere else if not for that first used game.

And that's before we even bother to look at the most basic issues. Can everyone else in my flat use it, or do they have to buy their own copies too? If it's tied to my profile, what if I get banned? Do I suddenly effectively lose £800 worth of software, and need to buy it all again? If it's linked to a console, what if it has hard drive issues or if I want to play it on both my home and university consoles? What if I want to take it to a friend's house to show them? What if the code I'm given doesn't work, or has already been used by a pirate?

This is just typical short-sighted industry greed that does nothing but hurt everyone in the hope of creating short-term profits.

I think that because of this I will only be buying my games from the xbox live marketplace. Then I will not need a CD. I will just re download the game wherever I go. That is if the xbox marketplace will have the games for download at the same time as for purchase. :3

:gsd:

I have so many discs because games don't release on-demand on the day of release. I think there are good reasons to download games, but also bad ones since it can easily be lost. If your harddrive breaks down or something, you just lost all of your games (unless you go into your download history). I don't know, I guess they have near the same consequence, but I guess if I had to choose, I'd go with downloading a game, which is why I don't care if the rumor that the next Xbox won't support used games.

If these rumors are true then I will not be buying either of the new next gen consoles. I'll go buy a Wii U instead of buying a console that won't allow me to play used games and constantly have to stay on the internet. Yeah sure it will help to combat the whole Piracy thing but, come on those are some BS features. I don't wanna spend $60 on a game I might not like and if I don't well then I'm SOL and have a new shelf ornament to collect some dust.

Well it seems that the newest things are to screw the customer in new ways, first off online access necessary seems wrong, lets be honest not many but I dare say some will not have that available to them.

No used games, well thats just a scam to get more cash, very sad and poor show from xbox, either remove hard copies altogether or let be what is.

No ability to play 360 games well that just means I will be in no rush to get the next gen I suppose at least till I game I really want comes out as most of the time my 360 will be on instead of it lol...

Wow microsoft really are out to do their customers, maybe it is time for a switch to playstation as odds are you will get more for your money, I mean the ps3 gave more than the 360 (bluray, free online), only reason I bought xbox was Halo and that is getting worse so meh..

Well, I am a husband and father now and the thought that came to my mind when this popped up on the web was that if it was true than I would have to start building a gaming rig again and then go back to PC games and steam. Now I understand they want the money but this is a little overboard and trying to monopolize the industry. I think if they want peoples support on them they need to have either a code that even though they bought the game that they can choose to redownload it via micro transaction if the disc breaks or hard drive crashes from their account or scrap this bs of an idea.

I am not one to give up on halo but if microsoft thinks for one second that its consumers will buy into this crap they better rethink their game plan. I don't believe this is right to do, but if they want to dig themselves a hole let them. It is not my business to tell them what to do with their product, but count me out on this one if they go through with not letting used games to be played on the console.

I have been a gamer most of my life and I don't want to give it up, but if this comes into play there is going to be a backlash from every community. All I can say is that it will not look good for either microsoft or sony. So in the mean time it is time for me to be putting up some money to gamestop for some games that I have not yet had the pleasure of playing.

They are trying to make sure that companies are not going to make profit to what is technically their consoles games. New games the publisher gets a nice cut, while the store only gets a percent. However, as long as used games are being turned in to the store, the store can turn around and sell them for a nice chunk and get FULL profit without having to pay anything to the publisher. It's like taking money that really isn't theirs to have.

Not a bad idea.... Bit not a good one either. I am going to stick with the old rumor I heard that there will be two versions of the console. One built like stared above, and another where you can use a disk etc like normal.
