Firstly sorry I have been inactive with the news the past few weeks I have been busy with the family the Christmas and all and I had some Internet problems too also the latest gaming news has been pretty slow over the holidays and nothing much has been reported, again sorry for the inactivity. So on with the news.

It has been said that Sony will be making second hand games not playable on the PS4 by filing a patent and will verify if a game has been used on another console. This may indicate that the PS4 may also not be backward compatible as well as restrictions to PS4 games. So no more preowned games? Will friends not even be able to loan each other games? Will microsoft be going down the same road for the next gen Xbox?

Read more about what Sony is doing with this below

This article is from Gamingbolt.

Sony has filed for a new patent which will restrict second hand game sales if it is granted since the tech attempts to verify if a game has been used before on another console or not.The patent reveals a lot of information about how they will suppress second hand game sales and while it’s a bit complicated we will attempt to explain it a bit for you.

First here’s why the patent was filed for via

Gamechup and Free Patents Online.

“In such a scheme where the electronic content is bought and sold in the second-hand markets or the like, the sales proceeds resulting therefrom are not redistributed to the developers. Also, since the users who have purchased the second-hand items are somehow no longer potential buyers of the content, the developers would lose their profits otherwise gained in the first place,” the patent reads.

What it suggests is that, developers are losing revenue on second-hand game sales and it’s something that cannot be eliminated unless it is stopped at the core. The tech needs to be implemented in a way that prevents the game from loading before a check is completed. What check? Here’s an explanation.

Consider, for example, a case where used is a game package 200 distributed in the second-hand market. Then the ID of reproduction device for the game disk 210 differs from the legitimate use device ID stored in the use permission tag 220, so that the game disk can be reproduced in a mode which is predetermined for those bought and sold in the second-hand market.

Also, for example, a content key may be supplied to the reproduction device 130 and the encrypted game AP may be decrypted using the content key only if the reproduction device ID matches a legitimate use device ID. Hence, use of game APs bought and sold in the second-hand market can be eliminated.

Actually I hope this comes across all consoles as a standard. While second hand stores like GameStop seem nice and offer you great deals, the sad part is that a lot of revenue gets lost to the developers and parent companies. GameStop only pays for "new" games which gives the devs money. second hand sales line only the pockets of the store itself. Have you ever asked yourself why games have gone up so much over the years? Development cost yes, but the dev cost never gets recouped easily because tons of gamers just wait till it's available 2nd hand, rather than make the solid honest purchase first hand. Good for Sony for this!

No you misunderstand. The game will likely get locked to your console, which is linked to your profile. If you go to xbox.com and look at your profile, it shows you what content you bought, and what content is locked to your registered consoles. As long as you register your xbox, you can transfer locked content licences to a new xbox to regain the stuff you bought legit. The same will likely apply to Sony. So no matter how consoles you break or rebuy, the content or game disc you bought, will be usable on a new console YOU own and register.

What about those that can't afford to buy a new game because it costs too much? If this comes into force the cost of new games is not likely to go down; in fact you'll probably see a rise regardless or at least a maintenance of the status quo. The fact is the offer of second-hand games allows access for people that can't afford to fork out £40-£50 everytime something they want comes out. Heck you can wait two years and the price won't have dropped to something that resembles something that is a reduction in the grand scheme of things.

I get what they're aiming at but suggesting second hand games are not 'honest' is a blinkered view in my opinion; With paying for rent, bills and food I get little money for myself and the chance to buy a game for a good price (often 50% or more off) is a great thing for me; if offers a window into playing games I couldn't otherwise due to lack of price. The developers wouldn't get that money anyway; I wouldn't be able to buy the game, so realistically they aren't losing something they would be getting (i.e. my money) as I wouldn't be able to give it them anyway. What this is essentially saying is "Well if you can't afford it at full price, tough luck. You don't deserve to get it as you can't afford to buy it". I doubt they're going for that approach but it is the general picture. I can no longer play a game by borrowing from a friend or by getting it second-hand; instead I'm just not allowed to play it at all unless I sprout money out of my rear.

Capser, what doy uo think kids like me did way back in the day before Funcoland, gamestop, EBGames etc...? We bought what we could afford. And through that, we appriciated the games more and spent more time focussing on that game and making it fun. Big companies like gamestop and Gamefly to name a few, would like nothing more than to force game companies to rely soley on them alone to distribute games. have you ever heard of gamestop supporting giving profits to MS, Sony or Nintendo for the blatent ripping off of customers and the resale of perfectly good titles? no you haven't...you know why? Cause they are a large conglamerate that cares nothing about the gamers at all. have you ever been in the store long enough to hear any workers hound you about pre-orders, add-ons..buying extra crap..? They care about the money, not power to the gamer.

While some of you may be upset over this, it really did need to happen. From a game development standpoint used games are horrible.

Let's use 343i and Halo 4 as an example. Let's say you go to Gamestop to buy Halo 4 about a week after launch and you are faced with the choice of getting the game new for $60 or getting it used for $55, from your perspective their isn't much difference, it's just five dollars right? To you yes, but the real difference is where your money goes after your purchase. If you buy a game new then money is split amongst the developer and the brick and mortar store, probably about 10% to the store and 90% to the dev but that's just a guess. If you buy it used though the developer gets nothing, nada, zip, zero, the store who did nothing other then put the game in a drawer gets all of your money.

TL;DR New = developer gets paid Used = developer gets nothing
