Halo 4 Legendary Ending is an Insult Rather Than a Reward

*********SPOILER ALERT*******************

As you may know, Halo 4's ending was a glimpse of Master Chief's face. Now why would 343i put something so hotly debated into the game.

Most people I talk to don't ever want to see his face, I certainly don't. You can't put a face to him because no matter what it will be disappointing. The mystery of Master Chief is what made him such an iconic character. For the past 11 years, we've known his face to be his helmet and nothing more. To show his face is like changing his appearance in a way.

Seeing his face is like reading a good book and having a great image of a character only for it to be ruined by the movie.

Seeing as many people never want to see his face, the fact that 343i put his face in the legendary ending is an insult. There is no warning, it was just like BAM here's his face whether you like it or not.

I am extremely bothered by this and the fact that 343i has already shown this much in ONLY their first game is even more bothering. Next thing you know Halo 5 will open up with Master Chief in normal cloths with no suit on in the first cutscene. Stop showing him. I know him as a man in a suit and that's all I ever want to know him as...A badass man in a suit who I have no idea what he looks like.

You only saw his eyes and you're making a big deal about? you didn't even see the whole face, that would be a whole different story

Yes it is a big deal. Chief's face has always been a big deal. There are a significant amount of people who don't want to see it for various reasons. If this is only Halo 4, and we still have 5 and 6 to go what does that mean for Chief's identity? It's only the first game and we've already seen so much of Chief between the trailers and not this abomination of a legendary ending.

It seems developers are in a competition to see who can piss off their fans the most. First ME3, then AC3 and now Halo 4.

All you saw were some eyes and some wrinkles. You know what he looks like from the books, so this is not a big revelation or anything. Nothing distinguishing was revealed. I liked seeing it, because it rammed home the fact that he is getting old, and just being told that by some DB captain doesn't do it.

You are working yourself up over nothing.

When did seeing his face become a bad thing and don't speak for me. I don't care if they show it or not, either way helmet or face it is nothing more than a superficial aspect of the character. Neither his face nor his helmet define who he is. Just like your face does not define who you are. You might as well complain about seeing his hand or his feet which have never been show either. It's the characters actions and motivation, his choices and mistakes that will define him, not a friggin helmet.

I agree somewhat with your answer, but John has only been described as a kid. It's a shocker to see him about 40 years older.

I imagine all of the Halo's down the line will let us see different parts of Master Chief's body, it's a hopeless fight to try to stop 343.

You can stop them, but not legally. (Don't get any ideas) But, yes, I do hope to see more of his body, wearing his Under armor please, not nude XD

Normally I'd agree with you; I never wanted to see his face either. But after all the **** I had been through with him it seemed fitting. And it wasn't his whole face. Just a glimpse. His whole face would have been different. I would have been entirely against it. But they wisely chose not to. They know how important his face is to us and I feel like they did a good job giving us not too much, but just enough.

Sure, but that's more about you than John. Nobody likes to get older, iit makes us feel vulnerable. Even when we see those around us age. But that's life. For the Master Chief it is like we would see him lose his mystique. In the armor he seems invulnerable, but what is he outside the armor? You have only ever known him with it, it's like he becomes sommething else in your eyes. Lucky for everyone he is not doctor who, it's only armor, and he is still the chief. Notice how you called him John and not the Master Chief, my guess is because it is personel for you. How long have you played the games? 5 years? 10 years?

I wouldn't worry to much about it. I also would not go on to say it is an insult, what insult? Eyes you can't even see? If you do end up seeing the Chief which I doubt ever happens, would that change him. Imagine if someone else put on his armor, whould that make him John 117? No, because it's not about the armor

OP, 343i said they will never reveal master chiefs face. They are just trying to get people knowing that he isn't some machine, he is a human. They will not have master chief fully revealed lol, I can confirm it when I find the video.

I know what video you're talking about, but they said "You'll never see his face" as in you won't see his face in Halo 4. They will probably reveal his face in Alo 5 or 6, hopefully.

The legendary ending is a totally logical one. The whole theme of halo 4 is Chiefs journey now, taken out of his comfort zone and exploring the more personal aspects. I'll admit I felt somewhat shocked when I saw that section of his face, but this is like telling everyone that yes... he truly is human. It really drove it home for me. However I do agree with OP that... seeing a full face... it would do nothing but disappoint, you really couldn't live up to something like that. I'm ok with silhouettes and the like.

I too have a problem with the legendary ending. And it's not Chief's face.

It's the Legendary ending.

Halo 1: Johnson hugs an elite, something that makes me laugh even now.

Halo 2: No Legendary ending, but who needs it? We already have a cliffhanger.

Halo 3: The first appearence of the Forerunner planet. This is the best game ending i've ever seen.

(skip ODST wich is only a glimpse of Thruth and the Engineers under NM)

Halo 4: Chief's eyes.

I mean, what the hell. Should i be surprised? Astounded? Who cares so much about MC face, to put it as the Legendary ending?

Disappointing, 343i. I expect better from you.

This game did three things bungie never did.

1. Introduced book lore. (To the best of my knowledge.

2. "Killed" Cortana

3. Shown Chiefs eyes, something they didn't reveal intentionally. Until now.

My only hope is that he doesn't end up like Mega Man. A forty year old man with a hand cannon who by the second game looks like an adolescent (Benjamin Button) and by Mega Man X looks straight anime.

My point? Pick one good example of the Chiefs face and don't deviate. EVER. And the Chief unmasked is a very fitting legendary ending. If you didn't think 343 was all in on this game TELL ME how they could've given you more shock and awe. More bang for your buck.

The connection with the books is one of the best things 343 could've ever done.

How they could've given me more shock and awe? Seriously?

Mmh, i have no ideas...showing how did the Didact survived (because he survived), or where is he? Or what did the Covies...pardon, the Storm, after the defeat of the Didact? Jul 'Mdama anyone? And many others ideas...

Seriously, do you really care this much for Chief's face? I mean, if you read the books, you can have an idea of what he should look like. But putting it as the Legendary ending? No no no.

I never read the books. I think being a fan of the game and playing CE when I was 13 years old, now I'm 24 still playing Halo should be more than enough to be a "fan". And I wanted to see his face. Not read a book and use my imagination.

This comes down to one thing, and it's a personal thing...

Who is Number 117 to you? Is he the Chief? Or is he John? Or both.

There is a mighty significant difference regarding each perception,

The fact remains, Halo 4 is all about bringing the 'John' perception (so emphasized in the books) into better light. He is human. He is not an ambiguous machine of war, apathetic and unwavering.

He has heart strings too, and they've been strummed hard by Cortana's demise and lingering last words.

He's fought so many battles, confronted so many enemies, and saved humanity over and over...

But 343 brings a new obstacle to Chief's plate, one that has irony rapping furiously at the door.

He must wage war with his own humanity, he must realize who he truly is.

I think this ending was brilliant, and only further shwocases how closely and compassionately 343 handles this universe, and more importantly, handles the mystery and integrity of John; the Master Chief; Number 117.
