Level Boundaries

  1. 1. Should Level Boundaries be Removed?

Recommended Posts

I've been playing around on the new forge maps and I have to say, I love them. 3 Different themes/settings is a great idea. I don't even think that, as they are, the maps are too small. For how the maps are designed, the size fits well. I do, however, have a suggestion that would make forging a far better experience for everyone. (I have more, but this sticks out the most so I will focus on it)

Remove Level Boundaries

I can understand why you include boundaries on your maps. You don't what players to get places that may be advantageous or problematic when playing a match. 100% logical. But, I have never seen a reason, and this goes for previous Halo games as well, for map boundaries when making/editing your own map. We all know that there are out of sight areas that are not detailed/completed, but why does that matter?

I'll use Ravine as an example. I have to say it is my favorite of all the forge maps in Halo 4, by far. This map is HUGE! ... Except for the boundaries... As I was exploring as my little spherical friend, I noticed a few things:

1.) You cannot go water level without the soft and eventually hard kill boundary getting you before you touch it. I loved making water level or slightly submerged maps on forgeworld. It adds a great effect to your maps.

2.) You cannot go behind the rock spires on both sides of the map. Why not? I would almost bet my life they are completely textured. I was thinking that I could make a cliff face level the protrudes out into the ocean, but alas, I cannot.

3.) When you get close enough to the edge of the map, you can literally see the black line in the water where they set the edge of the map. If you look out into the distance, there is an insurmountable amount of free space just sitting there. Yes, the texture of the islands out there is low. That's fine. If someone wants to make a map that stretches that far, why not let them. It's their map. This would also allow people to make their large race maps because none of the forge maps give enough space to do so.

4.) The physical structures of this map extend higher than your moveable/buildable area allows, much higher. Why prevent players from building up there near the clouds, or on top of the higher rocks in the level for that matter? The boundaries even prevent you from standing on top of those.

Here's my idea for this. Instead of setting hard boundaries on your maps, use the placeable boundaries already in forge to set your desired boundaries. This way, players who want to be more creative can remove them and use your maps to their full potential. I can promise that if you do, the variety of great maps will increase drastically.

honestly they should give us a map that is very big, with no buildings, no mountains or rocks or crap in the way, just 100% flat, then let us do what we want with it.

also, a custom match browser so people can join in progess anyone who is playing a custom match.

maybe never?

I doubt a poll with 6 answers would be worth their time looking into. They might release a big map like Forge world, make you pay for it in the next map pack, and if you don't but those maps you won't be able to do all matchmaking LIKE ALL THE GAMES BEFORE....

I rly hope these guysv are different, because that's why i grew to hate bungie.

If at all possible, the addition of precision editing to forge, like in Reach, would be extremely helpful.

I know they added the magnets to make this not as necessary. However, the magnets are not always helpful and the "edit coordinates" do not always work well with the map. Sometimes you just need to slightly bump an object so it lines up better or looks neater.

I noticed a few of the buttons are not used in forge mode, but I am not sure if this is something that can be patched into the game.

Halo 3 had a few dlc specific playlists, reach had only the ones that only played those maps, and for the rest, they grouped you with other players that didn't have the dlc. No one stopped you from playing matchmaking.

From what I have played with so far in Halo 4's Forge Mode, I've liked it and I think it is a step in the right direction but a few things I would have liked to have seen (Not sure if these are all not in Halo 4 as I haven't played around in Forge enough yet to be adept with it):

-Weather selection. This would have been an awesome addition. Night time? Day time? Foggy? Raining? <-- I've wanted this for a long time.

-Too many Forerunner structures. This is starting to get stale. It would be good to have a structure 'palette' to cycle a particualr piece of scenery (ie, you could pick a Forerunner/UNSC/Covenant variant of the structure you picked) <-- This is a step in the right direction

-Once again, I'm not sure if this is covered in the zone trait thingo's but it would be good to remove abilities like jumping, creating kill zones, etc to help with map creation ideas

-Grouping Forge objects. (ie, you create a group name, and link them to a cluster of objects so that you can duplicate them as a group and manipulate the duplicated group together. Would help with absolute structural symmetry when making maps with two bases, etc)

I do hope they start expanding in what Forge can offer

I agree, while obviously an infinite map is a bit rediculous.

The boundaries being 3 or 4 times the size they are now I feel is reasonable especially on the x/z axis,

for it generally requires less changing of the level itself.

I wouldn't mind the huge spherical room from the campaign where you use the Portals in Mission 3 being a map, but instead you spawn in the middle on a platform and can build out.

Why don't we bring Forge World back? Why doesn't 343 make another Forge World that is made for building your own bases. I like the thought of a flat map but I think with limited parts, this could be too boring or too easy to get killed. I enjoy some rough turrain and natural covers.

please no bugs like disapearing opjekts or forge removes them after destrojing from the map like extraktion. More propertys for spawntime - more then 180.. timer to remove objekts.. timer for fallen objekts - not the 10 secounds and a fallen weapon disapeares. please check timer for zones and spawns - dosen t works if u wants spawn them later. if u chose team - the objekts can be taken only by that team or zones working for the team. Add costum zone standarts like take weapon on or of.. turn of waypoints or give them a teamcolor with noeffects. and please make costum zones mobile like put it on waerhog like costum zone in reach - neutral territoryzone. Gravity zone should be mobile to.
